Had one of these scoop up one of our young pullets last month in front of me and the 6yr old. He didn't understand why I didn't shoot it. Just explained to him about the circle of life. Did tell him though that if he sees a cat (no collar) trying to get into the coop that I'd let him shoot it

Kestrels (falcons?) follow the gold finches to our bird feeder every winter. They hang around the outskirts of the finch flocks and chase them every so often.

This was the second time I've seen it, both times it was around the bird feeder

Thanks. Looks like a male Cooper's Hawk in online photos.
Do they have an alternate name?

Looking at my Peterson bird field guide:
The color and dark band pattern on the tail tell me it's a male Merlin in that picture. It's not a Peregrine which would have more white on the face and more and smaller dark tail bands.
Merlins are 10-13" and Peregrins 15-20".
Merlins winter here. Peregrins winter here but are pretty rare.
A Coopers hawk measures 14-20". The colors around the eye do look more like a Coopers Hawk. If it was that large then it's a Coopers. Smaller it's a Merlin.

If you didn't see lightning shooting out of its a-hole, it ain't a Peregrine

Not a Peregrine. Either a Cooper's or a Sharp Shinned hawk.

FYI...Here is a pic Peregrine falcon I took from my office, in Shreveport, a year or so ago:

It's a Coopers. If smaller, it would be a Sharp shinned. I look for birds everywhere I go, and I have zero confirmed Merlin sightings.
