So I moved into a house that does not have any room for storing a boat... yet. I am ultimately planning to build a shed to keep a boat, but I was wondering if it would be a better option for me to buy a boat and keep it somewhere else in town or possible down in Venice or Empire.

What are the pros and cons here and in your opinion what is the best place to store a boat? Is the price of storage elsewhere worth it to not have to keep a large boat at my house in BR? The boat will be 18-22' long CC aluminum, for discussion purposes.

Have you ever kept a boat offsite? Did you find that it was worth the money?

This can be an issue.

A friend of mine keeps his in Myrtle Grove, so he is OK launching anywhere from MG to Venice.

Mine is on a lift in Venetian Isles; so I rarely trailer it anywhere else.

I would prefer to store it closer to home. Easier to do maintenance, more flexibility in fishing locations, can check on the boat easily, probably cheaper storage fees

I haven't done it, but my buddy and his dad were keeping their Nautic Star in Hackberry at an enclosed storage facility the last few years. They gave up the spot because it was too expensive for them (and that's saying something ). They make about 4-6 trips a year, and decided it was better just to trailer the boat back and fourth.

In other words, it'd be worth it if you went to Venice a couple times a month. Anything less, and your paying prime location prices for simple boat storage you could get anywhere else.

Venice will probably run you from $125-$175 a month for a boat that size. Not cheap.

Thats pretty cheap for storage if inside a building and not just sitting in the sun. I was paying $265/month to keep mine stored in Houma. Was the deciding factor to get rid of my worldcat sadly.

Don't do it.

You'll be tied to Venice.

Con---you have to go pick it up every time a storm approaches

Con---your insurance usually asks where you store it. If you put Venice, the premium will be higher

Con---if you do any work on it yourself, you have to drive all the way down to perform it

Keeping it down there makes it easy on the drive down and back, but that's about it. You still have to trailer the boat to the launch and launch it regardless of where it's stowed. So in reality you are only saving yourself whatever inconvenience is associated with the tow.

If you could find somewhere with supplied power (charging the batteries) and relatively easy access to water (running the motor) that was also less than 15 minutes from the house, I don't see an issue with it. Not sure where you'll find that though.

Can't comment on Venice storage.

I store mine locally (Prairieville). I think the unit is 12' x 30'. Has electricity, but no water. $213.00/month, totally enclosed.

It's nice and safe, but somewhat warm. I put a fan in it for when I want to work on it.

We trailer to Cocodrie 1-2 month. I like having it local so I can work on it when I want. Seems like something usually needs work on my boat.

Do you work on your boat much?

ETA: my boat is a 22' bay boat

I have 2 buddies with RV's, a bunch with boats and nobody has a good place to store them. I need to get in the storage business as this is the topic of conversation at the local watering hole quite often.

Yep, if you had some property, seems like you could do better than break even just with your friends.

There's a few places near BR that do just boats/rv's and most have a waiting list.

I'm in Prairieville too where do you store yours and do they have slightly smaller storage options I'm looking to house a 19ft bass boat I need my garage back.

I'm not sure of the sizes they have available, but the place is A-Store All.

It's right behind Performance Marine (formerly Ascension Marine) off Airline.

A lot of storage buildings have units large enough for a boat. It's just not cheap.

I used to store my camper in a fully enclosed unit, I'm guessing it was about 14X50, and it cost me about $225.00 a month in the Burnside area. The $$$ every month sucked, but I can tell you that one pro to a fully enclosed unit is that you could store other stuff in there too. I was able to clear out some clutter at my house by moving lesser used items into the storage unit behind my camper. If you get a unit that is only covered but not enclosed, then you don't have that luxury.

One of the best decisions I've ever made. My boat is 20 years old and looks brand-new.
$125/month in Venice.

I store my boat in Venice only real difference is I have a boat shed at my camp so I don't pay a monthly fee to store it.

If you fish Venice a lot I think it's worth storing it down there. I find it saves me about 15-30 minutes a trip not having to tow the boat down there. On top of that there are so many bad bumps in the road there especially between Port sulphur and Fort Jackson it takes a toll on the truck and trailer over time. For me it's a no brainer, your only problem is finding a storage unit down there, that hasn't been easy for a while.
