Old piece of wood for bench (or something else)

I picked up a hammock from an older lady (probably 80) off of Cragislist and she offered to sell me this bench for $20. Says when she was 15, they pulled it out of the Amite and she's had it since then. I bought it mainly for the story and a piece to put on the deck.
It is very solid, no soft spots, measures 9" deep, 15" wide, and 53" long.
a) anyone know what type of wood it is and
b) i guess if it hasn't rotted in 65 years, it probably won't in my lifetime, but would you sand it and polyurethane it?
I've thought of having it cut long ways into pieces and maybe making a coffee table out of 2 and using the remainder as a bench. Any ideas?

It's either pine or cypress. I'd lean toward cypress.

When you cut it you'll know by the smell...

I feel like cypress would have tighter growth rings. But I'm no expert

Pine for sure. If there are no nails in it and you would like it resawed, bring it to me. If it's 9" thick, by taking off about a inch off the top and bottom, that will clean it up real nice. Oh, I will saw it free for you.

Looks like a pine tree to me

That would make a cool fireplace mantle in a camp.

Nah you said it brother, 65 years and all it did was add character. About the only thing I would do to that pretty ol' piece is see if my beer will leave a ring on it while I'm sitting there.
