My 12 gauge can't tell the difference.

We shoot em. We eat em. They feed on rice where we're at.

Oh and my thread is not about whether or not to shoot them.

It's about statements like this...

Like they couldn't have flown in from some marsh the evening before...

I don't usually shoot spoonies, but late in the season when they are in full plumage, it's hard for me to pass on a big drake.

Hot SpoonTeal action!!!

We pass, unless nothing else is flying. At least they are pretty to look at.

Good lord man, yes I am aware of the size of spoonies. I am speaking in relation to the hens and immature drakes. Mr internet badass.

We pass on them in the rice fields, unless it is extrememly slow. i believe the main reason is they are not a prestigous kill

If you do kill them in the rice fields or fresh water marshes they taste ok. Once they get into the brackish water they will get a fishy taste.

A quick way to tell, after you kill one. Pluck a small area high on the breast near the craw and if the skin is a whitish color as most other ducks it is good. If the skin is pinkish it'll be fishy.

We don't shoot them in the marsh because there's no need in killing something you can't eat. In the 80's when duck hunting was slow in the rice fields because the big ducks were being short stopped ( still are ) in Missouri and Arkansas I have taken more than my share of them.

I short stopped my share in AR back in the 80s. God bless the old point system.

If I remember correctly (I've killed a lot of brain cells since those days) you got 100 points. Drake Mallards were 35 points and hens were 75(?) You could go over 100 points as long as it was with your last duck. The goal was to not shoot hens until last. Canvasbacks were 100 pts (I killed one as my first duck once and everybody laughed at me all day.) Pintails were 10 pts, so everybody like them. Most others were 10 as well. You had to keep up with your math. I heard stories of Greenjeans actually sticking thermometers in the ducks' asses to see what was killed last if they were really after you; but I never actually saw it. Good times.

There was lots of lying after too. I doubt that shite would hold up if challenged. I never saw it happen. It was more like a campfire horror story.
