I can use both but I pretty much only use baitcast now. Spinning gear had its place in the past for me but baitcast reels can cast much lighter baits than they used to. It helps I'm an avid bass fisherman so I'm pretty good with a baitcast even in the wind.

I use spinning reels in salt water when it's the only kind of reel the guide has. Other than that it's baitcast.

Reminds me of a show I saw on netflix...guys was going out to hand line a sailfish, he was inspired by old man and the sea.

They doctored it all up and tried to make it dramatic. It was terrible. I think at the end they had him getting pulled in by the hand line. He continued to fight the fish in the water and eventually got a hold of it.

Terrible.

I very rarely bring a spinning reel with me, and when I do it is rigged with a popping cork. Although I have considered getting a spinning setup for throwing light weight tackle recently.

But i'm with your buddy, I can't aim for shite with those spinning reels for some reason

Both.

I used only spinning reels for years under the impression that that's what you used for trout and reds. Baitcasters were for bass fishermen, and offshore.

When I first got a baitcaster a few years ago it frustrated me. Now, I learned how to use it, like it better for spoons, soft plastics, etc. I mainly use spinning reels for live bait and to loan to guests.

For freshwater, I like ultralight spinning.

real answer is that it is completely determined by the situation.

I use both spinning and baitcasters.

I guess I have more spinning rods that baitcasters but it isn't by much.

Most (not all) bass fishing is baitcasting.
Most panfish is spinning
Cold freshwater is spin.
Salt totally depends on what I'm doing.

I used to hand line kings, wahoo, sharks and jacks in college, commercially. Best day was over 500 kings (which we were targeting). Got some good sleep in my rack that night.

The damn jacks will wear you out. When all the lines would go up after passing a school of jacks, I wanted to cry. The boat never stops and it's like pulling againt a parachute. And, you had to throw them back because no one would buy them. Not sure about start to finish, but wiring sails is easy.

I use a spinning reel for all inshore fish and offshore for a few species like cobia, tuna and dolphin.

baitcasters for bassfishing. some bottom fishing trout. spinning for just about everything. slinging doubles, corks, wind, fast trout action, spinning works best.

That's nuts. Why hand line? Is it quicker?

Baitcast just about all the time

Spinning for Perch fishing when a cane pole isn't practical

I get a serious cramp in the forearm trying to use a spinning reel while throwing a popping cork!!!

They do have a niche but I really hate the feel

Spinning reels were invented by the same guy who invented the football-bat :)

Much quicker and that's just how they used to do it. You can skip a 30 pounder on top of the water if you can get them to come up to the surface. The boat never stopping helps to plane the fish and you pull from over your head for a better angle. 1/2 rope, aircraft cable sampo swivel, 16oz planer, 300lb mono, sampo swivel to 200lb mono. Sea witch (white/green, white/blue or white/pink) with double J hook rigged with salted bonito belly, or just a large spoon. I consider kings a trash fish, but during the summer you can find balls of them the size of the Super Dome, if you know what to look for on your screen. There are some monsters off of southwest pass, and smaller but way more southwest of GI.

That's awesome.

They are fun to catch from the yak, but I don't really care to eat them. I like my fish to taste clean, not oily. A lot of people dog it though.

All the people who say they used a spinning reel as a kid but don't now, what do you do in the wind? There's no way you can chunk a lure into the wind with a baitcast as well as with a spinning reel. I understand having a preference, but not using them at all seems like you're limiting yourself.

Spinning reel only, never have birdnest or tangles. My son is a baitcaster fan but I hate them.
