Tiger79 I just turned around and started on a field down the road. He goes to school about 30 miles from my house so he will have to just miss a day but there are plenty of chores he can do after hunting.

Honestly... if I had your profession... I'd seriously consider home schooling the kids.

Not advocating you do, just saying that I'd love to have my kids home with me if I worked a farm. I am pretty disappointed in the quality of public education, and I haved lived in the best school district in the last two states I've resided in.

I send him to a private school. Honestly if you do this b for a living its the last thing you want your kid to do when he grows up.

As a teacher I say take him hunting. If he is a good kid he can play catch up easily. Big bucks don't come around every day.

I don't mean that he should become a farmer... unless he wants to of course. In which case it would be better for him to be an educated one.

Just that there is SOOOOOO much time wasted at school. Honestly. If I could spend the time, outside, with my kids, doing those chores, or learning about machinery that he one day might want to engineer replacements for, or crops that he someday might want to help development improvements for, or any number of other things, including just a solid appreciation for fresh air ... I would enjoy it, and I think my own son would too.

and good luck with the deer!

This is the truest statement he can make. My Dad NO WAY wanted me to farm. I wasn't allowed to plow a field until I went to college. I drove tractors and stuff but never plowed. He told me once I started that I'd never quit.

He damn near was right and to this day I will ask my brother if he needs anything turned up and let me do it. Something about the smell of the earth grabs you and won't let go.

Mine wanted more out of me but 79 you are right it gets in your blood. I would just like his success to be measured by his effort and hard work not what mother nature does. But I think I am fighting a losing battle with him
