Looking for ideas on ways to conceal/cover my generator at my house. I thought about building a dog house looking box but I'm open to other ideas as well.

I have built a muffler box for a portable one but that was for sound dampening, not concealment. Make sure you have an opening for air in and exhaust out.

Is it air cooled or water cooled. That would make a big difference.

If water cooled you could have an air intake built in but it would have to be the size of the radiator on the generator and then just to be safe you would need an exhaust fan just for the air in the enclosure. That would be in addition to the hole for the exhaust pipe. If the air gets too hot inside the enclosure the unit would eventually overheat.

If air cooled I would think about a screened enclosure but would be hidden as well.

My diesel genset is enclosed in a wooden house. Looks like a kids play house. Doors on all four sides and I open the two ends when in use. The exhaust exits the side and has a rain flapper.

This is probably the safest way to go about enclosing a portable type generator. Of course the exhaust needs to blow out of the box but also the actual generator has a cooling fan and needs fresh air to avoid overheating.

I don't have one, but I would think you would want to factor in maintenance and repair access in your design. That would be in addition to ventilation.

4 ft vinyl fencing, each side is essentially a gate that can open for access.

Air cooled or water cooled is the main question

You can actually buy one.

It's a portable type that I have a NEMA L14-20 connector on the house to wire up to (already made up the cable and verified operation).

It's a 4K genset..portable...air cooled gas powered.

The idea of the air flow intake and exhaust output is a requirement. It's got to have that...so that's why I'm asking for mainly cosmetic ideas.

Yeah, I'm looking for something smaller. Something that looks like a big dog house but with exhaust and fresh air intake available.

But....in reality...if I need to run the genset...I don't mind running it uncovered. It's chained to the concrete...when they built my house I had them embed 3 ft of chain in the concrete pad that's per my spec....It's 6in thick....for security I made it very thick...

I would build an enclosure with a good suction fan and back louvre to pull air hard across the unit, and an exhaust connection. Make the louvres like an attic vent, make the enclosure look like a little dog house or lean-to kind of thing.

Will be a haven for black widows and other assorted bullshite

I would make two whole opposite sides louvres, one side with a good strong fan blowing air out

A trick with gensets is you want the air flow to be forced from the back of the generator to the front of the engine, it helps keep the generator cool. If the generator has a cooling fan though, make sure you force air the same direction across the generator that it's fan does so you aren't fighting it.

Also, keep in mind you'll need to be able to fill the gas tank. Don't frick that up by making the roof too low. Alternatively, buy/build a substantially larger tank, put it in the "attic" and put a full neck to it outside.

This can easily get as out of hand as you'd like it to be. I make engines run indoors for a living, we can engin-nerd this to death

Yeah I might just make a doghouse style concealment box...but take it off when it's running, since I'd rather hear it running in the background. It's quiet already from my side of the house and you can't hear it at the street.

You must be the only human on the planet who WANTS to hear their generator running
