I have a Tikka T3 .30-06 with an 11" twist barrel.

Today I shot 150 grain and 180 grain federal blue box through it. The 180's were giving me 2" groups and the 150's were a little over 1". I've also tried some 210gr Berger VLD's which were all over the place. I guess the heavy VLD's are way too long for the 11" twist.

I'm very comfortable using the 150's for hunting, but I think it can do better, so I'm going to buy a box of something else to try just to see. What factory hunting loads do yall have good luck with?

Update: Federal Preimum Sierra Gameking 165's @ 100 yards

Shot the top two, moved it down a little and shot the bottom two. Feeling much better about my rifle now

11/29

Shot a doe with the gamekings at about 175yds today.

Very satisfied with the performance. I forgot to take pictures because the mosquitoes were eating me alive. Hit about an inch lower than where I tried to put it. Went in behind the shoulder through a rib and came out through the knee joint on the off side. Very good blood trail and the deer died at about 50 yards. Good enough results for me to try again.

I went through this a few years ago with a .308 -- I know the .308 is a different cartridge, but ballistically it's a very similar bullet/load combo.

I mentioned one day to an acquaintance (former .mil sniper) at HR Gun Club that I was having trouble finding a round that rendered good groups and would also be a good hunting round.

He suggested two things:
1. Give the barrel a little time to get "broken in" - said it varies from gun to gun, but some need more rounds through them than others before they "settle in." (he also said something you undoubtedly already know -- some guns "like" certain ammo, while other guns of the same model "like" different ammo).

2. Try Hornady 150 grain SST ammo.

I'm not sure if my barrel happened to get 'broken in' about the time I bought some Hornady 150 grain SST ammo, but the difference was night vs. day. Two-inch groups at 100 yards went to literally in-the-same-hole.

Obviously YMMV, but thought I'd chime in.

Find something in the 155gr range. My 30-06 likes them enough to drop 8 of them in a hole smaller than a quarter. Better so far than the 168 and 175gr loadings I've worked.

Have you shot any deer with the SST?

I had a pretty bad experience in my .25-06 with them.

I bought a 270 T3 last season and shot three deer with the SST. All here dropped in their tracks. All shots ranged from 113 to 225 yards.

I'm a firm believer in the SST after shooting Core-Lokts forever in both 270 and 30-06. I have zero complaints with the Core-Lokts, but my new rifle set-up shoots the SST much better at a longer distance. I spent good money on my gun and scope and decided to spend good money on my ammo as well.

Got exits every time?

I'm way more concerned with having an exit than dropping deer. I shot 3 deer with SST's out of my .25-06 with no exits and I found a doe via buzzards because of it. They did shoot extremely well.

Thats just a TSX with plastic stuck in it right?

Do they expand on deer? I always suspected they'd be a little too heavy duty for swamp donkeys.

Yeah, it is a Tipped tsx. It is perfect for deer imo. That is what I use exclusively.

Have you tried the Accu-bonds in the 25-06? I skinned one last week from a 25-06 that completely obliterated the chest cavity. I was highly impressed with the damage from that round.

Nah the SST was all I tried. I only had the gun for a year.

I'm sure it was the calibers fault more than the bullet, but I was very unimpressed by the terminal performance. It was a hell of a tack driver.

Go to the store and buy a box of several rounds and shoot to see which you gun likes the best.

My T/C Encore .308 likes Winchester silver tip the best in 150 gr.
I shoot Barnes TTSX in my 6.8. Haven't shot a deer with it yet. Hopefully me or my son gets a chance before long.

Yeah, it's the tipped TSX. They are extremely accurate for me. They perform well on deer too. I've always had plenty of blood if they didn't drop within view.

Didn't realize they had their own ammo line.

Why is all of the SST stuff super performance? They don't load regular shite anymore?

Winchester powermax when you can find them. Corelokts next after that.
