Just got a wire haired pointing griffon a couple weeks ago and wife is going outta town this weekend with kids leaving me with her. Roughly 2.5 months old. Never owned a dog so excuse my ignorance in the question

Is it ok to leave the dog outside in a secured back yard all day in this heat with some fans running while I play golf for 4-5 hours? Rather not wake her up and put her right back in her kennel all day

Kennel the puppy. Safest option all-around.

If it truly is secure and she can't get out, she will be fine. Run a fan if you want, but it won't kill her as long as she has some water and a place to get in the shade. Probably be the best day of the dog's life if you ask it.

Do you know she won't try to dig out? I'd be more worried about that than the heat.

Best thing I ever did with my lab was kennel training her. Yeah it sucks throwing them in there but they learn to treat it as their safe space.

I’d wake up early and try and wear her out and then kennel her for your golf outing.

Put it in the laundry room while you're gone, you can put the dog in there too!

This

Pups like that really should sleep 16-18 hours a day. So wear her out and then put her back in the kennel to sleep.

i wouldnt put a puppy out in the heat. Some will say its fine and it may be, But i wouldnt. If the dog dies from a heat stroke your wife will probably have you on the list next

Put it in the kennel. It’ll be fine, it’ll sleep the entire time. Like the others have said, wear it out early. You don’t need to leave a 10-12 week old pup outside that long. Dogs do better when kenneled anyways.

If you’re worried about it having something to do, put a deer antler in the there with it.

I think it depends on whether there are cool spots in the yard.

Growing up, our pekapoo, tons of hair, enjoyed lying on the concrete under the carport in the summertime rather than be in the air-conditioned inside.

And that was about one hour from the Louisiana coast.

This.

Kenneling is one of the fundamentals of keeping your dog safe and out of trouble.

If you do go the deer antler route just buy it at the store. I spent a small fortune last season to get my antlers!

Another vote for take the dog for a walk that morning and then kennel her while you golf.

Start at smaller increments. And work your way up to that amount of time. If you have a nice covered area, and enough water, the dog should be fine. I do it all the time with mine.

Kennel is the safest bet, pups are not as well adjusted to the heat so it’s a terrible idea to leave her out there. Also, left to roam she can develop any number of bad habits without any correction. Or she could eat something that could make her sick.

That being said, 4-5 hours for a 2.5 month old puppy is a long time without a bathroom break. Although every pup is different. I’d see if you could have someone at least take it out mid way through your absence.

Pups need lots of sleep but leaving a pup with a small bladder in the kennel for 5 hours is one way to make them stress out about the kennel.

If you can’t get somebody to help, the next best option is taking in the kennel inside the truck with AC running. I don’t know how long a round lasts because I don’t play golf, but at least you’ll be back quicker. You can also run back and let her out if things run too long.

I just got one myself.

I’d say no not yet. It’s too damn hot, and I don’t know if they fully acclimate to heat at that age. I’d rather clean a kennel than permanently injure a dog or worse.

Where did you get the dog?
