Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Dr. Mike Strain reports a possible solution has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency to fight the feral pig problem.

“Its a bait”, says Strain, “to help eradicate the feral pig.”

The bait is called Kaput which is fed to the feral pigs for three to six weeks using a specific type feeder that only a feral pig can get its head inside to feed on the bait.

But Strain cautions to “be sure and follow all label instructions” when using the bait.

Not sure if i am a fan off this, we do need to rid the hogs tho

Hopefully this KAPUT kills them within hours cause i couldnt imagine killing a hog then cleaning it putting it in a black iron pot and it just ate poison. Imagine what the woods will smell like with dead hogs decaying all over the place, be like riding through the spillway after the morganza locks were opened with all the dead wildlife everywhere. Talk about ranked

Another good idea I heard was to create something that would sterilize them and prevent future breeding, but like the bait, it doesn't work if they don't eat it.

I wonder how long it'll work. Pigs tend to learn quick!

That would be better in my opinion, i run dogs with a bunch of buddies and they kill a good bit but at the rate that a hog breeds with 1 sow (correction of my idiot self putting Sal) giving birth twice a year to up to a dozen piglets it will be hard not matter what you do, and like another poster said hogs are a pretty smart animal and will pick up on this if i had to guess

What about the scavengers (or people) that feed on the poisoned animal

and yeah you need to kill upwards of 80% of the population to not have an increase in number of pigs each year

You don't think the EPA thought of that? Obviously it's been tested and found that it doesn't have any adverse effects to other species

ETA: If I had to guess it attacks their stomach liner or intestines and thats how it kills them

i heard that is has some chemical (sodium something)that their stomach cant digest and it slowly kills the pig. Deer are able to digest the chemical

Dead ones don't.

But, I don't think they'd ever figure this out. They're smart, but not smart enough to figure out that the reason their friend Porky had a stomach ache and died 4 hours after eating was because of what he ate. Now, if one ate it, got sick, and lived, that one might not eat it again.

It's probably sodium nitrate if I had to guess. It breaks down quickly so it's not harmful to other animals who eat the dead pigs or to humans, only to the pigs themselves upon ingestion.

That being said, it would be deadly to pretty much anything that ate it directly. The poison isn't new, the ability to administer it to only pigs is though.

The problem with sterilization is that like the killing methods we use now it's hard to reach a large number quickly. It also doesn't remove the hog from continuing to damage.

Using hormones to suppress is transient and not permanent.

There's an anti-FSH which has been used in wild horses, but again it just transient.

I've been trying to find out what's in it, to no avail. If it's something that they have to keep eating for weeks in order to be effective, I can see hogs avoiding it at some point. Even dumb arse animals tend to keep themselves from being poisoned.
