I know that the "45/70" is referenced to the diameter and load of black powder, but what me and my roommate were wondering is, is the barrel rifled or is it known strictly as a muzzleloader?

Not known as a muzzleloader at all. It's considered a "primitive weapon" here. Which is a completely made up term used by Gren Jeans to make more money.

Also, muzzleloaders have rifled barrels.

rifles have rifled barrels, not all muzzle loaders are rifles, some are muskets.

ETA some are also shotguns before anyone gets offended.

Yeah the 45/70 with modern smokeless powder kicks like an angry mule.

Actually 45/70 is mild compared tomany. I have shot a DE BFR 45/70 handgun and didn't recoil as much as a 44Mg. Long burn powder low PSI loads. This was Remington factory. Corbon makes some bad arse loads.

I put a pound of lead in the stock of my 45/70 and 444. My 12 yr old shoots the 444. Recoil is minimal now
