I'm in the Walker area and need som sod put down. Does anyone know if the Home Depot in Denham has any well tanned day laborers hanging around in the early morning??

Yep. After the flood there were dozens but things have slowed down. I still see a handful every time I pass by.

Not sure if you noticed but they replaced a bunch of signs that said no soliciting/loittering or something like that with the now hiring sign.

The signs popped up within a week after the flood and the hombres were using them for leaning posts.

BTW, I saw one Hombre sitting in his white F150 in front of the Denham Home depot with signs written on poster boards all over the truck that stated "Electrician for hire all day"

I have never once seen a day laborer at any lowes or home depot around shreveport. I wonder why that is? We definitely have our share of illegals.

Usually the installed price is only like $20 more a pallet. Sod laying is not a high paying job. Should have gotten it installed.

Well to update my story, I went to the HD on Coursey & Airline about 7:30 this morning. About 20 hombres attacked my truck when I pulled in to their area. I told them I needed some sod put down and that I would pay $100 per man and I needed 4 men. They all backed down and said they wanted $150, so I left. Came back in about an hour and a few of them came to the truck and said they would do it for $120. Two of them rode with me, and 2 followed in their truck. One of the guys was a white guy from Baton Rouge, the others were El Salvador/Honduras. We got to the house and they went right to work. I told them I wanted the sod laid tightly together and neat. They finished in about 2.5 hours, and picked up all of their trash and stacked the empty pallets. I gave them some gatorade when they finished and paid them. I stopped at Burger King on the way out and got them all a Whopper meal for lunch. Dropped them back off at Home Depot and they went and laid down under a tree. Very easy and never felt in danger. One of the older guys was very nice and told me he did concrete work, and gave me his cell for any other odd jobs I needed. All in all, I would do it again.

It came out to $40 per pallet, and that is about what a turf company charges to install their product.

I have always thought the same thing. Ive been at the HD on Airline plenty of times early weekday mornings and I have never seen anyone standing outside looking for work.

Heck, I don't even have to go to Home Depot. There's a Chevron about 1.5 miles from my house in an area that has plenty of Amigos living nearby. They hang out in the parking lot and I know several neighbors that have picked up a few for some landscaping work.

Call Sport-N-Center in Denham Springs. Ask for James Adams. He's the GM there I do believe. But he also does sod and landscaping work on the side.

Cash discounts may be available.

ETA: Didn't read far enough to see your update. Glad it all worked out. But when you think about it, the liability and follow-up to the work if needed would've probably been worth it to work with a turf company.

why did you think you'd be in danger?
they are people, willing to do an honest days work for relative compensation

which is one hell of a lot more than you can say about the local demographic in BR
