Went fishing yesterday. When I went to get my truck I noticed that my license plate was gone from my trailer. It looked like it had been just ripped off. It is possible that it happened on trip but I don't think so....fairly smooth ride. Is this something that someone may do to cover a theft? Should I be concerned? What should I do. About to call wildlife and fisheries now. TIA

Call police, report a lost or stolen tag, then get a new tag

I had mine stolen from my trailer also. Call your sheriff's office, they will make a report and you can go to the DMV and get a new one.

I think you're doing the right thing. If someone else had a trailer stolen in the area they'll know to look for your license plate as well as theirs. I wouldn't be concerned about your trailer, except to get a new plate. It is possible it just got knocked off, too. Maybe a piece of road debris like a tire or something.

I've heard of several cases where they will put your license plate on their vehicle and use it as a decoy when they get gas and drive off without paying for it. Obviously you won't be responsible for it, but it's still a PITA!

mine was stolen as well...as OP said report it and go pick up another one...mine was a perm tag so that's probably why it was stolen...taken from parking lot at the landing...

Did you have a permanent tag? If so, it was stolen.

Mine used to get knocked off all the time. I got tired of reattaching it so I just stuck it in my back compartment. I've seen guys use heavy gauge split key rings to attach it to the trailer.

After my bracket got broken a couple of times, I just turned the tag sideways and bolted it to the trailer fender.
