Alright, apparently mine is somewhere on the bottom of Toledo Bend. Without the part it still drives, but when you turn it's slides out slicker than normal. Not as steady, or feel like it has a hold of the water as well if that makes sense.

Trying to find the part, but I can't even figure out the name. What is this called?

1997 Merc 115, FWIW.

I have an after market one. 'Whale tail' hydrofoil.

ETA:

Poster above me is probably correct - I googled his response and came up with 'trim tab' photos that look exactly what you've circled.

Boom. That and trim tab gets me lots of hits. I lost it last fall and forgot about until yesterday when I was give my boat the old once over preparing to go to Toledo this weekend.

Looks like I can order on on-line for cheap, but it won't be here in time. I may try to find one locally, but it will operate until the part comes in if not.

Thanks for y'all's help.

I may be completely wrong, but I think they make those to be sacrificial so that they corrode to save your lower unit from corroding. Maybe that's why it fell off?

You are thinking of the sacrificial anode.

wrong and right.
It is a sacrificial anode along with the 2 others located on the trim motor assembly and elsewhere.

That makes me feel better. I do run this boat in salt water some. It was the original from '97. I noticed last year it was loose, so I tighten on it with a pipe wrench, but even tighten all the way down it still had some rattle/wiggle in it.

The rectangular anodes look fine.

Hopefully this is a part I can pick up locally at a boat store today.

just order an entire anode kit for your motor online and be done with it. They are designed to be a maintenance item.

Maintenance? Pfff... I did that a decade ago.

Seriously though, that's a good suggestion, but I really just need a quick fix for this weekend.

There is a bolt that you access from the top that you should be able to tighten instead of using a pipe wrench, it is adjustable so if you ever feel your boat pulling to one side you can adjust this to help out some, it is meant to counteract the pull from the rotation of the prop.

It is also a sacrificial anode.

That's what I tightened. The use of the pipe wrench was just because it looked big and the pipe wrench was handy.

I noticed it was always slightly cocked opposite the prop rotation. I'll keep that in mind installing the new one.

I've always called them anti-cavitation plates

I've seen no less than 10 mercs with a chunk broken off of it. We had the port side merc acting like it spun a hub when it was trimmed up while running. Air was getting sucked into the prop causing high revs. Wasn't much fun thinking we were gonna have to limp in 60 miles on one 275.

Doesn't affect its anchoring ability though you'll be fine

Edit - just realized you were talking about the other part. Nevermind
