re: My recent Walmart experiences make me think employees are hiding ammo

Ill say this: sometimes the ammo is held in the back for the reason of gun purchases
As some of you know I work at a gun store. When we get big shipments of sought after ammo in, we out most of it out and keep some in the back for when we run out of the stuff on the shelves.
It sucks to sell a $1300 rifle to someone then tell them we are out of .223. So some of that stuff stays in the warehouse for gun purchases.
And as an employee (not of Walmart) we are not allowed to but up that ammo. Only the stuff going on the shelf out front

Some of the local gun stores are doing that and I understand their thinking.

That's a good point and prolly is a factor for stores that sell guns. Unfortunately, that doesn't affect my local WM as it sells ammo, but no guns.....

seems to me the irrational gobbling up and hoarding of ammo is the cause of this, if everyone would just settle the frick down, ammo would be just fine.
All I want is one box of .22 LR to shoot nutria in my backyard...and I am shite outta luck. I am now launching bottle rockets topped with black cats at them, and my 4 year old is hurling rocks in an effort to fend em off.

I'll mail you a couple of 50 count boxes of Golden Bullets if you are sitting on E bro.

Hmmm...maybe I need to go into the business of buying penny bottle rockets and bringing them to La...since they're legal here in Bama.

I don't want to go to Academy and wait in line.
I want to go to Academy at anytime during the day, any day of the year, and get .22 LR.
I see a problem when it is April and folks are in line to get 3 boxes of ammo for no reason other than to get it. If you don't, that is fine, we think differently.

Damn, thanks Judge. But then I couldn't just sit around and bitch about it
I really do appreciate it, but I do have a few left. Just got to wait on a thunderstorm and have the frickers line up so I can get a few babies in one shot.

No worries. If you change your mind just let me know, I'd be glad to do it. There's been a surge of paying it forward lately when it comes to the OB. Just doing my part to continue the trend.

Well I know they can check inventory at other stores, different employees at different locations have done it for me numerous times, I have no proof that he could really see what was on the next shipment
I've worked at Academy and while they can check inventory of other stores, all of the shipments are ordered and distributed by headquarters and are not visible to local stores. Academy also does not keep a back stock of normal sized items. If it doesn't fit on the shelf by the time the next truck arrives, it gets returned to the warehouse.

Where are people getting all this money and time to go stock up on ammo? When is enough enough for these people? Does your entire closet and bunker need to be full to the brim? I guess some people aren't putting up their usual savings/retirement or something thinking that this is a safe 'investment' or at least a worthwhile endeavor that deserves immediate attention. I just don't see it...
I am sitting here not going to the shooting range because I only have 2 boxes of target loads. This is ridiculous.

It's not just a few people spending retirement money. This is thousands of people spending any free change they have. It's going to take a long while to balance out again.
Especially for people like me. I'm a new gun owner, and want to be well practiced with my weapon. I've only spent a few hours at the range in total and went through 400 rounds. I buy a box or three whenever I see them and that's rare.
I do sort of enjoy the irony in people asking others to limit their purchase of ammo all the while bitching about the government attempting to do the same.

you damn skippy. We have a pretty legit shot of having to fight off the government coming to get our guns, small game hunt to feed our family, bartering needs when currency is worthless, not to mention the ever present zombie issues.
We dealing with a lot of shite here.

I'm in the same boat. I bought a gun 3 weeks ago and have only shot it twice because I can't find 9mm ammo. Who are these whackjobs hording 9mm ammo thinking the Damn Gubment is coming for it? Obama is the best gun and ammo salesman this country has ever seen.
It's a horrible snowball effect. You can't find it so you start hording it when you do happen upon some. During my lunch break I went to 3 stores and didn't find squat.

Why would anyone be shooting a gun right now? Isn't Turkey the only thing open?

I've always assumed that the ammo shortages we're experiencing is from panicked buying and hording. OTOH, ST's comment makes me wonder if some of the shortage may be from increased ammo needs due to a larger number of shooters due to new shooters/gun owners entering the gun/ammo market?????..... More shooters=need for more ammo......

9mm is one of the easier rounds to find for me lately. It's .22 and .223 bulk to a lesser extent that are needles in a haystack.
