Since the large majority of the our crawfish supply comes from the Basin, is the season basically over if Morganza's opened? I'm sure prices will skyrocket and bugs'll be pretty scarce?

What effect will this have on next year's crop?

I know that they will still be available from farms and private ponds, that's not the question.

I’ve always been told that flood water is good for craw fishing…I would think that prices would drop.

I heard the exact opposite

I heard that the BC spillway will provide excellent crawfish, I'm getting my burlap sacks ready for when the water goes down

There is a thread about it on the flood board, this would be a good time to organize an OBKS (Outdoor Board Kill Session) and have a good sized boil

yea I heard the cheapest crawfish ever got was when they opened it up in 1973. The only thing that would ruin it if they dont allow the crawfisherman to fish

Somebody said that a distributor is going to be paying around 30 cents a pound as compared to 1.35, but let me go check the flood board for sure on this..

Flooding is definitely good for crawfish, but it may delay the basin part of the season, since that starts long after the pond crawfish starts. may be had for the fishermen to get their traps out and picked up in the super high water, especially considering some of their homes might be flooded, giving them other concerns.

I posted this on the flood board the other day. But one of the buyers here in bayou sorrel told us the other day they expect crawfish to go as low as .40 cents a pound. That means we won't be making any profit at all. especially with the increase in gas and bait prices.

And to correct one of the previous posts above, the majority of our crawfish does not come from the basin anymore. With Louisiana trying to put more crawfish on the market and keep Chinese crawfish out, our state now has almost 200,000 acres of crawfish ponds. And not toention people have been putting Spillway crawfish in their ponds the last few years in order to produce better crawfish.

It depends on this water. If it gets as high as they are saying we will need buoys to put on traps in order to fish.

They always do. That's when farmers use them to stock.
