Mercury Outboards

Are they really as bad as the reviews I've read make them out to be? I plan on having a boat built soon, and was considering powering up with a 90-115 Merc. Should I go with Honda or Yamaha?

Fresh or salt water?

Despite what this board seems to think mercury is on par if not better reliability wise than Yamaha these days. And their new 115 and 150 4 strokes out class their Yamaha competition in almost every way. Especially in price and power.
What are the dealers for each like in your area? That is key in the decision making process.

Yamaha, Stihl, Xmark. If you remember nothing else, remember those.

Optimax 150 is one of the GOAT motors, who says Mercury is bad?

I beat the shite out of an early 80s Merc 25 every year and cannot kill it
I just put a 2012 merc 115 4 stroke on a pontoon boat and love it so far
that said, the Suzuki 4 strokes are the best value in that mid range and that's what I would buy new. I've got a DF175 on my big boat and it is 100% reliable and trouble free

The Optimax is the motor I like, but they don't make them in the 90-115 hp range any more.

Just some of the online reviews I've read. I work, part-time, for a Mercury retailer and can get a decent deal on a new motor, but I just don't want to buy a bad motor. I plan on having Reno build me an 18' skiff as soon as I can get my son out of LSU and save the dough to pay for it all.
Another thing I don't understand about boat motors is that 75 - 115 hp motors are the exact same engine, so why the different HP ratings?

Gotcha, ill say the Optimax HPDI motors especially 150 and up are some of the best motors ever built

My 83' Black Maxx 150 2 stroke was pulling wake boarders all day Saturday. First time out in 6 months up here in NC, and cranked on the first try.

I always said if I bought a 90 or a 115 it would be a Yamaha because of their reputation but I just haven't heard anything negative at all about the newer mercury four strokes and I'd definitely consider them. They seem to weigh less and have higher displacement for less money. I'm buying a merc 150 four stroke soon.

I see tons of old yamaha and merc in saltwater
Everyone loves their zukes when new, but in 5 years when the paint is wearing off and a new lower unit is 5k, not so much. Yes they are gaining market share and repowers but at a significant discount.
Look at the countless pro xs hanging on back of all the bass boats, plus mercury has dominated the racing scene for years
