So my partner decided to have a flat tire, now I'm out marsh hunting by myself for the first time ever. Worried about being attacked by a gator. Please assuage my fears. No dog involved.

Stay still; their eyes can't focus to see something not moving up close.

Thanks. Yeah, but he'll probably see me first. And I can't watch my own back, so... :-/

Also. I'm not sure which marsh you're in but I doubt gators are going to be worried about you, if they're even out.

They move very slowly in the winter. I walked past a 7-8 footer 2 weekends ago he didn't want any trouble he was focused on trying to sun bath

I just looked at yalls weather. You could probably walk by them on the bank, while you're waist deep in water and never even see them move.

Like the other guy said. They'll be lethargic. Enjoy your hunt, stay safe.

99.9% of the time the gators don't want anything to do with you. And they won't try to sneak up on you on land. I wouldn't sweat it. You're much more at risk to wreck the boat and die of hypothermia.

Main thing to do is don't panic. We had one swim up to us one time when we were standing in waist deep water. My buddy got all fidgety and tried to climb up on a log. They gator was on him in a split second. Took him out past the decoys and all we've seen of him since is a severed hand and his Costas. Just be calm and you'll probably make it

I've thought for years that gators weren't shite eaters, like some dogs,, that proves it!!!

If one comes up on you, be sure to relax, take a deep breath, and aim well - I hear finding that kill spot is a bitch.

Are you hunting with a shotgun? If a gator fricks with you, shoot the fricker.

I've crawled many many a marsh in the Gulf South and have encountered more than my fair share of gators. Never once has a gator even close to been aggressive. We used to hydroslide in rivers and would literally wipe out with gators within 20 feet and no issues. Not saying it won't happen, and yes, it's scary when they're within eye sight and you see them go under, but as long as you don't crawl up on a nest of eggs I think you're going to be ok. One of the scariest things I've seen in Louisiana is if you ever go crabbing at the Rockefeller Refuge there are gators everywhere and there are kids running back and forth on docks/piers that have no enclosures or railings. The gators are all just sitting there waiting on one of those kids to fall in the water. Never heard of any issues, but if a kid ever falls in out there it's probably not going to be a good day.

When i was younger they didnt bother me at all. I would wade fish around them all the time with a stringer of fish latched on to my belt.

Nowadays, nope. Last time I saw one in the water with me I looked like a marching band leader high-legging it out of the water.
