There's a reason a rendition of the 92 is chosen by the armed forces.
On the other hand the PX4 is the most hideous thing I've ever laid eyes on.

Saying "Beretta" is pretty broad. My Beretta shotguns have all been extremely reliable.
As was said the M9 (Model 92FS) is uber-reliable. I have owned own for 25 years, but would never choose it for SD if other options are available. It has a slide-mounted safety, the safety moves in dumb direction [up =engaged], it's huge and heavy.
I don't own one, but understand the PX4's to be considered pretty reliable. Longevity (able to handle high round counts) is still questionable. At least the PX4 safety lever is designed to move in the proper direction, but it's still slide-mounted. The bigger issue, according to a SME at LSP is the rotating barrel.
Not sure if this is any help. I have no experience with any other "modern" Beretta handguns, but would be glad to ask my LSP source if there's a particular model you're considering.

Thanks. I just know you always trust LE agencies buy you never mention Beretta. For some reason, I thought LE and/or military used Beretta. I don't know why I thought that. Maybe I've seen Lethal Weapon too many times, I guess.

My buddy has an M9 and I've seen it jam quite a few times. We went shoot at precision once and he couldn't get it to run to save his arse for a while. After two cleanings and about 80 rounds it started acting right. I guess it had some nastiness in it somewhere. As far as I know he hasn't had any problems since.
I can shoot that gun almost as well as my Blackhawk, which I have substantial trigger time on and makes me look good.

The US Army picked the M9 (Beretta 92) back in early 1980's (maybe 84?). It had a lot of problems, locking block was redesigned as I recall.
I don't know of any major LE agencies issuing it. Glock has most of that market sewn up (67% at last count). M&P is making inroads into LE market. HK & SIG are trying to increase their LE market share with DAO triggers (fewer & fewer LE agencies want DA/SA triggers.
ETA: I bought my 92FS shortly after the US Army selected it as their sidearm. I used it as a nightstand gun for a short while (with safety in the off position). It was always reliable, but far too bulky for carry use.
Mine literally sat in the safe for over 20 years, until a buddy at the LSP crime lab recently mentioned he needed one to train his niece before she shipped out to US Army MP school. I loaned it to him for a few weeks, then put it back in the gun safe. I have no plans to shoot it, but also no plans to dispose of it.

Apparently its the magazines that cause a lot / most of the problems. I don't have any first hand experience with them but I have talked to more than one military vet who all say the magazines would not hold up in training or in country.

That's very strange. My 90 two's safety in the "up" position on the slide means it is disengaged and ready to fire.
But I love it as range gun. There is virtually no recoil since the thing has a wide slide and a metal frame. It is a breeze to shoot. But for a carry gun, I agree with Dawg in that there are much better options.

My bad. I was dumb (meant disengaged). Safety in "up to fire" is bass-ackwards to me.
Of course none of my carry guns have an external safety, so it's really easy for a dumb redneck like me to get confused.

Naw, shipping was like $12 IIRC, and the FFL was like $25, so it totalled out to under $400. My dad went to Bass Pro yesterday and they wanted $425 for the exact same one. Add tax and that is almost $100 more than what I paid. That's a few boxes of bullets right there

Well, I didn't know... so I just googled it... then I called the man I bought this gun from, and he said it is the original base pin and plunger, but the spring was replaced by his gunsmith and he doesn't know what brand or type.
He asked me why was I concerned,... I said I was simply asked about it..(weagle-thanks)
