Looking for a good tent

My son goes to camp in North Carolina for all of June every year, and we'd like to get him a tent for Christmas. I've just started a basic search and i'm not finding good reviewed tents for under $100.
Came across this marmot tent that's on sale and, based off the reviews, seems pretty solid. LINK
But definitely looking for other suggestions. Don't want to go above $150, if I can. help it. tia

Rakuten has 15% cash back at backcountry. I don't think you will find anything solid under $150.

Marmot is a quality brand. Is he just camping or backpacking?

4 lbs is pretty heavy for a backpacking tent, but it’s not unmanageable. I’ve never used or owned a Marmot tent, but I’ve had other products from them and they’ve always been good quality. I would have no fear using a Marmot tent for an extended trip like he’s taking. However, the lack of mesh may make for a hot sleeping experience depending on his elevation. I found this ALPS Mountaineering on REI Outlet for $179 that’s much lighter and more suited for backpacking, IMO.

yea, the 5lbs had me wondering. He mostly goes on paddling trips that are about 2-3 night overnights, but hiking isn't out of the question either. Good point about the lack of mesh.

If he’s paddling mostly then weight really shouldn’t be an issue. I would think his main concern will be ventilation in the tent. It gets hot here in June as I’m sure he knows. Especially down in the valleys where most of the paddling takes place.

Which apparently is so long ago, while looking for a link, came to find out they’ve been discontinued.
I bet one could turn up somewhere. Price would be in line with OP’s budget.

I got a Eureka two person tent from Dick’s Sporting Goods that is a great bang for the buck and easy to get in and out solo.

I have a Eureka Suma 2. It's on Amazon for $153.
Solid tent. It's a full pound less than the Marmot you linked. Not that that's the end of the world or anything.
Prices go up significantly when you try to get below the 3.5 pound range.

I bought a 2 person Kelty at a consignment store in 2017. Have been using the piss out of it. They run 100 to 150 new.

And yes there are lighter tents for sure; however you're entering that weight to durability to price realm. Which means his ideal backpacking tent will cost much more than 1fiddy and not last as long as this Marmot. Which is partly because the lightest materials come at a premium and partly because Marmot simply makes good gear. My last general purpose tent (backpack/car camping) was also a Marmot of similar design and it lasted well over a hundred nights. Also have an ALPs and they make good tents but not in the same league when considering materials, price, and design. Kinda of like Remington makes a highly serviceable shotgun, but Barretta makes better, and then you can go for a dream gun.
BTW: true backpacking gear these days is weighed in oz's and referenced as ultra-light... which is not to say buy something else because this is a nice looking tent.

The side walls are not mesh and once you put on the rain fly, the mesh at the top is pretty useless. You won’t get good air flow or circulation.

Grams. Ultra lighters measure in grams, not ounces.

Probably don't need a crazy ultralight tent. I second the post on looking at Sierra Trading Post and Steep & Cheap. Should be able to find a small technical tent

What area of NC is he going to be in? I’m in Bryson City and I’ve got an entire building full of camping/backpacking gear he’s more than welcome to come pull from if he wants

I have the previous version of this tent, the marmot limelight 2p. Had it for 10 years and it’s been great.
