So I've got an AR that I am currently rebuilding. It's set up as a long range match barrel 223 wylde. I'm wanting to have this be my 0-600 yard range toy mostly living it's life with a Harris or atlas bipod attached.

That being said I want a scope that would match this setup. I want to spend about 800 and I am looking at the NF shv 3-10x42. I'm drawn to it because it's a durable scope that isn't just setup solely to hunt. I really want something with a good adjustable turret system and I know that repeatability is nightforces namesake.

I want to know if I'm messing up leaning in this direction and if there are any others I should really be looking at.

Leupold Mark 4's are no longer offered to the civilian market. I would look for a used Mark4 4.5-14x50 with M1 turrets in good condition. Mildot or TMOA reticle. Comes with a Lifetime Warranty and built like a tank. You should be able to find one priced around $750-850 ....

I'd buy the LEU over the SHV

The SHV is a good scope. There was another thread with a bunch of similar options just the other day.

Nightforce SHV
Burris XTR2
Bushnell LRS
Swaro z3

I think those were the most recommended. I cant think of the others right now.

The leupold mk4 had its day. Its still a solid optic. The only way I would use one would be for a clone of some sort or if you got one where the adjustments matched the reticle. No M1 knobs with TMR or mildot for me.

Yeah just can't say I'm a Burris or bushnell fan and the z3 is probably what's going on my hunting rifle. Want something a little more "tactical" minded as lame as that sounds for the ar15

Have you tried the new scopes from Burris and Bushnell?

They are light years ahead of where they were 10 years ago. I'm pretty much sold on Bushnell. The tactical scopes they have come out with are pretty awesome. Only downside really has been weight.

The Burris stuff got better when they linked up with Steiner. That really speaks for itself.

Nightforce is nightforce. I mean they are what they are. The only negative and it really depends on how you look at it. That 3-10 shv only comes with a second focal plane reticle. Not a huge deal, but it will mean that you will have to do some math if you aren't on whatever power its calibrated for.

The others have ffp models in that price range.

Normaly they are calibrated for their highest power setting. When shooting 200-300 plus where that would really matter for wind I'll be on ten power anyway. I honestly really don't like sfp

Yup, just until it gets hot and that mirage becomes a killer. Shouldn't really be that big of a deal at 10x, but man we have some hot days down here.

ETA: I won't talk you out of the nightforce. Its a great piece.

Some of y'all probably have better eyes than I do because if I'm shooting over 200, I want as much magnification as possible.

My long range setup is a RPR with a vortex viper on it. 6-24X50 in a 30mm tube. Very good glass for the money and was $600ish if I remember right.

I shoot at 300yds monthly and the 2.5-10 and 3x9 leupolds I use work very well. Really trying not to over glass the gun. I mean it's just an AR I don't really want to end up with a telescope

Just out of curious it's, why the .223 wylde?

If you want a long range rifle to 600 yes the 6.5 grendel could be a much better cartridge.

Because it's not entirely dedicated to it. It still shoots 556 and 223. Just supposed to be the gun I grab when I go to the range. I want it to be setup so I take the iPod off and it runs the same as everyone else's 16" 556 ar's. It's not a bull barrel or anything so it's not a mule.

The only reason I end up shooting it long range is because it shoots 77gr smk right above 1/2 MOA. So I feel like it's a disgrace to put a low power scope on such a good shooter.

If I'm really building a long range I'm probably doing 6.5 cried bolt gun. But I'm still at the stage of my life when I need my guns to fill as many roles as well as they possibly can

Had a thread on this the other day.

I've decided on the 5-20x nightforce shv.

Just bought a vortex viper HS LR 4-16x44 with exposed turrents, bdc reticle, and 30mm tube from midway for 399 with free shipping.

For the price, I think the glass is pretty awesome

Now the real question is the 3-10 or the 4-14. Can't figure out if the 4-14 is is worth the extra weight size and money to be put ontop an AR
