400 yards, with someone else's high end rig. A 308 with a scope worth more than a nice used car. It was on thier high fence (all be it 3000 acres) place in west Texas. They are geeks about ballistics so what I've seen get shot usually drops. If not it gets found easily. Folks that are that eaten up with it don't find a challenge in 100 yard shots and don't take them any more. I think it's cool, but I'd go in debt to get sucked into it and have other priorities at this stage of life.

Taking a long shot isn't that big of a deal. It just requires capable equipment and lots and lots of trigger time and practice to know what the conditions are going to do to your point of impact.
IMO taking a shot holding over a certain amount over the back is a recipe to either miss or cripple. Having a scope you can dial in your holdover and Windage makes it much easier to be successful on long range shots.
