Alligator snapping turtle.

I thought loggerhead was a nickname, so no, I was not aware they are different species. Sue me.

You right, Clyde.

I always knew them as loggerheads when I was in North La.

That is a level of stupidity that should be unattainable.

I agree that's dumb as frick but we don't know all the info. If it's a private pond and he has raised that turtle and they have a bond thenm that's pretty fricking remarkable.

If it's a wild one, (which I don't think it is) and he just caught it on a good day than I would hate to be him when a bad day comes around.

My biggest fear watching that is he will show some kid one day and when he's not around the kid will try it himself and lose a hand.

Wish I knew more about the whole deal though.

It is, as a matter of fact, a loggerhead snapping turtle. You know, because an alligator snapping turtle is the technical name, and loggerhead is the nickname. There is also a common snapping turtle found in LA that has no ridges on its back. It is not a loggerhead.

In other words, you were correct all along.

That turtle is probably 80 years old.

So if enough stupid people call something by the wrong name, it become's acceptable? An alligator snapper has ridges, a common snapper doesn't. A loggerhead is a type of "sea turtle."

BTW, I'm just fricking with you and I've heard them referred to as loggerheads as well. But it's situations like this that make Ebonics acceptable.

Lol. Yeah. You're absolutely right though. The loggerhead turtle is a sea turtle. I was just saying in reference to loggerhead snapping turtle...which I know isn't the correct name. But what folks refer to as a loggerhead (that isn't a sea turtle), is the alligator snapper. I've heard folks say that the two species of freshwater turtles are alligator and loggerhead. Thought maybe some of that was going this way on this thread. My bad.

Poor loggerhead is going to die if someone doesn't put it back in saltwater. That's just cruel.

Some people call Crappie White Perch or Sac Au Lait and I have even heard them referred to as Specks.
Then we have the Bowfin also referred to as Choupique or Grenel - sp? or Cypress Bass.

No big deal here.
When I was a kid I think I sometimes referred to snapping turtles as logger heads when we used to catch them.

Many people in central Florida fish at night with cane poles, live minnows, and Colman lanterns around grass beds and catch loads of Sac Au Lait. However they call them specs. Been there, done that.
