Let's Talk About Floating Blinds on 55 Gal Drums

Now that my lease is paid in full it's time to start thinking about blind building. We need to build a 4 man blind and want to float it on drums. Any of you with experience have any do's/don'ts?

Problably rust in a few years. I'd go pontoon or don't go at all. Styro sucks also.

plastic, FTW
Would have to put some agua in them to ballast/sit it lower in water, right?

Great Foam spayed inside the plastic drums. Maybe some steel laid in the low side for ballast.

No idea. This is all new to me. I looked around but couldn't find a completely stripped pontoon for cheap.

My grand dad had one on drums that he kept up near Walls Lake in NE LA for years. It was pretty well built before my duck hunting career took off but I do remember rust doing that beast in. Like you said, styro is no bueno as well. Would only consider a pontoon boat or just stick to a boat blind.

Should be able to find the 55 gallon drums in plastic.
ETA: this is what I'm thinking. Can't be that expensive?
ETA2: If we get 4 they're $63/ea LINK

Usually you can get old brake rotors for free from a garage. They have lead in them so watch out for environmental police.

someone has a pontoon boat made out of these in my neighborhood lake. 4 of those on their side with a wooden deck on top of them and a trolling motor. Kinda funny looking but I guess it works.

Someone said they needed metal to try and ballast it.

True, but you still have to fill with foam and the other floating dock modulars are made to easily add wood, no so on the barrels...

So these dock systems are pretty sturdy
It'll be in some flooded land with plenty of big breaks. Got about 130 acres to play with.

Check the shipping, it could be a deal killer...

Me and my dad built one like the following for the camp. We use it one season and made a floating dock out it now.
Here the site where I got the pictures.
