I know nothing about them but probably handy enough to install one.

Will be running master bathroom...shower, 2 sinks and tub. Not sure about what size I'd need or anything.

Best thing i ever put in my house. Always have hot water. And can take hot showers for as long as you like and the water never gets cold.

Only thing to watch for is you will need to flush it or have it flushed every year. The coils get buildup and the heat exchange reduces.

This is what I'm told as being the only issue.

The gas ones are great. Electric ones, not so much. They pull a lot of power. Like I said the gas ones are fantastic, especially if there are a lot of women in your house that like to take long hot showers.

Good to know! I'm considering one for my new home but was told this by multiple sources! You have gas or electric?

I put 2 gas Takagi brand ones in when I built my current house. Haven't had any problems for the 5.5 years, so far.
Haven't heard anything about "flushing" it.
Didn't put them in to "save money".. I put them in to save room and for efficiency.

as others said they have to be flushed and cleaned every year. my dad has been in the plumbing business for 25 years and I just built a house with 2 standard 50 gallon gas water heaters instead of an instant. He sells more of the regular gas ones then the instant. my input but they seem to work well but they do have maintenance that I'm sure no one tells the owners about.

Do you frequently run out of hot water with your current setup? Or at least run out enough that it bothers you? If not, dont mess with a tankless.

Don't have a problem with running out of hot water. We have a unit that is 11yrs old and has a bad element.

Trying to decide if it's time to just replace the thing

I have a Rinnai gas unit that has been in my house 10 years and have had zero problems with it. I have flushed it out one time. Have an outlet outside the house where I can wash my car with hot water.

Well unless you have an extra grand or two you just NEED to get rid of, just spend the $450 on a new electric tank and go about your life.
However if you have nat gas then you could save some money in the long run by switching to a gas tank heater. But plumbing everything in new plus a vent is a pretty big job and probably not worth it. Especially if nat gas gets more expensive in a few years.

ETA, Savings from electric to gas is more then I originally thought. Here are the energy guides from a comparable 50gal electric and a 50gal nat gas. May be worth your time after all. Just know whats involved in venting/plumbing in a gas unit.:

Well, if you aren't running out of hot water and only have electric available, for heavens sake go back with the tank.

Any chance you can just replace the element?

Yes element can be replaced. Just didn't know if I should just bite bullet and replace the entire tank because of age
