replace the entire tank because of age
That depends on the type of water you have. Some water eats tanks in just a few years, other water you can have 30yo tanks still trucking along.
If its in an area (like garage) where it won't matter too much if it springs a leak then I'd just replace the element if I could.

Location is another thing, it's in my closet

I have a gas tankless. Don't know anything about installing it or potential problems. But I haven't had any issues since moving in 2 years ago and have an endless supply of hot water.

The gas ones are great. Electric ones, not so much. They pull a lot of power.

Check in to a recirculating system to go with it. Probably add $200 to the cost.
One poster called it instant hot water, and they are anything but. It is endless, but slow to heat up. The recirculating system will keep it where it will get hot quicker.

Modern electric tank heaters have surprisingly low "standby" costs. Last time I checked the general consensus was that they cost $2-3/mo to keep the water in the tank hot with no outflow. The foam insulation they use is basically like wrapping the tank in a Yeti.

Cost more than you will save with them
you cannot put a price on unlimited hot water. my kids will never have to know what it was like to need to claim the first shower if you want hot water.

I've had electric in my house and my camp for 20+ years. No issues. Never run out of hot water. Also use electric in my processing plant. Been running it for 12 years. Once again. No issues. Absolutely love them.

Love the constant hot water, but that's only after the pipes empty. Which, in my master bath, takes a good 3-5 minutes.
If you have the option to put it in the middle of your house/lines, i would definitely do that.

I will have to check into this.
