I have not been fishing in almost fifteen years but recently my nine year old son has been asking me to go. I am looking to get him a fishing pole that would be easy to learn on and also any other advice you guys could offer.

How old is your son ? Zebco is the easiest to start with . I would try and start him on bream , youngsters need some action to keep them interested .

He is nine years old and never really been so that might be a good suggestion on bream.

Shakespeare kids reels are junk from my experience

ETA: just noticed he's 9. Get a Zebco 33 combo from Walmart or Academy. If you're in Baton Rouge, LA Wildlife and Fisheries has a top notch place on Flannery Road. It's Waddil Outdoor Education Center, and is free to the public. All three of my kids caught their first bream there with crickets. Easy fishing, but catch and release only.

WaddillOutdoor Education Center is conveniently located in Baton Rouge on North Flannery Road. It is the perfect place to get away from it all either with family or by yourself. We offer two ponds for fishing (catch & release only), nature trails, a swamp, the Comite River, picnic facilities, and plenty of open spaces. With 280 acres, Waddill is a little piece of wilderness in your own back yard.

Agree with the zebco suggestion. Maybe $40 to get a rod n reel ready to go. I bought a couple last year for sac a lait poles and I think they're 5.5". Good for a 9 year old.

Hard to beat the Zebco 33

Then upgrade to a spinning reel, or "open face" if you will.

Kid Poles Suk

quote:

I’d really love to see a high-end Barbie tournament, where 10 of the top bass pros have to compete with one another using these dinky outfits. I bet the catch rate would go way, way down. One thing you’ll learn if you try this is that maybe little kids don’t need that handicap either. If such tackle is so hard for an adult to use, why stick a kid with the same thing when you’re trying to advance him or her in the sport of fishing?

Get him a grown up rod and reel. 6' Uglystik and a GOOD Zebco or a spinning reel with spinning Uglystik. I recommend Uglystik because it's tough and economical.

My 9yo has a Zebco Micro. It is a pretty slick little rig.

Definitely start the youngsters at a place easy to catch bream. Usually they have fishing built up in their mind as easy, so a boring trip may deter them from attempting again.

Looks like you are roughly 4 hours from ole Ponchatoula-town, but my pond is always open to young kids. I stocked it with hybrids that will take a bare hook. All OB brethren are welcome. Small pond, but guaranteed catch.

Get a Zebco but put some red Cajun line on it. He will think it is cool, because it is.

My 8 year old has an easier time with the six foot rod than the 5 foot one I got him. For bream and crappie I like the 5 foot for myself so win win.

Amazon has a saltwater Daiwa spinning combo with a 7 foot medium for for under $50. I've got two of them. The only thing I don't like about them is they have pretty long handles. Other than that they're solid and you can't beat them for the price.

Didn't notice the kid was nine. 7ft is probably too long.
