Teen who survived duck hunting accident, killed overnight

LIVONIA- A Pointe Coupee Parish teen who stole the hearts of the community after he was shot during a duck hunting accident two years ago, died overnight after a train hit him.

Investigators said around 1 a.m., Brandt Torres and his friends were putting coins down on the train tracks at the Livonia Rail Yard when he was struck. He died at the scene.

Brandt Torres made a miraculous recovery after a friend shot him in the head while they were duck hunting two years ago. The community came out with candlelight vigils to support Brandt. Ultimately, he made a full recovery.

"I'm happy that I made it back and made it through everything," Brandt Torres told WBRZ in January of 2013. "I'm doing a lot better."

Last night's tragedy took place as the family got ready to mark two years since Torres was shot in that duck hunting accident.

"To see that tragedy and him survive and now wind up here, it's a sad story," Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Bud Torres said.

The Railroad is conducting an independent investigation into what happened. None of the friends Brandt Torres was with overnight were injured.

Well, that is saddening for the family and friends.

But wow. How unlikely is that to happen

Unbelievable sad for this family. Grew up in the area and know the family (not close but it's a small town we all know each other). After being shot his survival was a miracle, so so sad to have him go after that.

When the first accident happened, one of the kids on the hunt called 911 and in mid call hung up and called his momma (nurse), from what I understand her instructions helped save the kid's life.

Sad stuff. Feel terrible for the family.

But how does one smart struck by a train? They may be doing 60+ mph, but it's still a damn train. I don't see how they could sneak up on you.

Really? I know they have speed limits on all the tracks. I can't imagine they are that high, or that they would change at night.

Just from personal experience, I've been bow fishing on a railroad bridge (no trains within miles of us) and had a buddy wedge his foot through some crossties.. Took us a good 2-3 minutes to break him free, granted we werent in a hurry.

I know his older brother. There is Union pacific station in maringouin I was thinking maybe it was around there since it wasn't that far from his house, but I'm not sure. Very tragic situation nonetheless

It was at the UP yard area. Just a terrible tragedy. I feel so bad for his parents and grandparents. All of his family are good people. God bless them for having to deal with this at Christmas

This is why the railroad police are such hard asses about people trespassing on their tracks.
