Is that "prairie" on the map?

How would it be launching at Lee Landing and paddling west into the "prairie?"

Yeah, we usually do really well when we just want to shoot teal. I have shot a handful of greys and one greenhead out there, also early in the morning you can shoot woodies. Bring some coot decoys with you because the birds land with them 90% of the time.

is the dirt road on the ponchatoula side of the sign in station or the manchac side?

When you get to the station sign in and go down 51 towards ponchatoula. its about 100 yards down before you get to the interstate there is a little dirt road on the right. Go down there maybe 20-30 yards and you will se the marker. No problem man. hope you enjoy it!

I've never ventured out towards Lees Landing to hunt. The prairie that we hunt we launch at Manchac and go across the lake and across North Pass. I dont really hunt the prairie too much, but can get some info and post tomorrow. The marsh im talking about is still close to 55

If you ever get back out there PM me. I would go tomorrow, but im on a shutdown

ETA: Was not talking about launching under the bridge. Before the little podunk launch on side of the interstate you will see a dirt road. Don't want you to be lost! haha

I'm in Joyce right now. Anyone here eat coot? Seriously. They're everywhere.

Yea, seen plenty. I'm definately going to bring some home; just don't know how many yet.

However, I'm surrounded by dozens of swimming coots. Do people eat these? I just read on my phone that the limit is 15. Are any parts of the bird worth eating? Breasts? Gizzards? Hearts? I may kill some and experiment.

They're great live decoys, so I would hold off on whacking them just yet. You need to summon CootKilla - I'm sure he'll know about the table worthiness of the poule d'eau. How was the paddle and how long did it take you to get to your hunting spot?

Yeah, some people eat them (but then again some people eat hardheads). I think ppl kill them for the gizzards.

not everyone would agree but I gave some to my girlfriends dad and he cooked a gumbo with it.
I told him it was wood duck (bc he said he didnt like pool deaux) and he didnt notice.

I told him after that it was pool deaux and he said, "damn maybe i was wrong, because that was good"

I'm planning on riding out to Joyce on Monday morning to make one last hunt before the season ends. If any of you guys are gonna be out there, let me know.

Well if he doesn't come back I may have to make a hunt, and report back...Literally live 5 mins away. Just don't want to go out if only coot are swimming around.

Rough paddling in 2 inches of water, stepped out of the yak for one second when planting decoys and sank into chest deep mud that invaded my chest deep waders, accidentally got on the wrong side of the powerline before daybreak which is technically not the WMA (aka trespassing), and other shenanigans. It was a learning experience to say the least. Now that I'm familiar with the area I'm sure next time will be much more successful. I got 2 good ducks and 3 coots (for experimental purposes). I know where to go and where not to go now. Having a buddy help you drag the yak across the tracks will make next time easier too; I'm very sore. Thanks for all the info and help. There are definitely ducks here and hopefully will limit next time and I actually expect to.

yeah, thats Hammond property and they used to be cool with it, but now they are pricks. Yeah, the water is shallow. I took my 12 yr old BIL last year and pushed him through bracing myself on my pirouge Only time i have sweated in 20 degree weather. Let me know next time you go always better with 2 or 3!

I stripped down to my t-shirt before the sun was up and then had to layer back up after I made a blind. It's a serious workout.

I've found a flat bottom canoe with a push pole works best. My pirouge is rivited so gets stuck very easily even with push pole. Haven't invested in a canoe yet, so my hunts in Joyce have been far and few in between.
