Yup, and pay attn to this. Atom/Solar system. Central mass with shite flying around.

Eagle/Buzzard. Eating old turtles versus young ones. Respect. Nope, not even close to an analogy. Not only is it not an analogy, it's just butt dumb.

Back when it was cool enough they wouldn't spoil I would leave them on Sunday and check on Friday. Last one started stinking so I only set them when I'm going to be around to check to check every 24 hours now. I always thought trapping was something that you needed to be taught hands on but I've had pretty good results by just diving in. Watched a bunch of videos and read some online and went out and put my outdoorsman knowledge to work and have been satisfied with the results.

Check your local laws. There is a trapping season but where I am one can trap on private land anytime.

There are a lot more big turtles like that in the southeastern US than people believe.

I dont know what these people believe but they are considered vulnerable as a species and endangered in many areas.

As are many other species we legally harvest on a regular basis and nobody bitches about it. Go here if you want to see all the critters LDWF considers to be rare or threatened. Just because a government says it's so, doesn't make them correct nor does it make prohibiting harvest ethical.

I'm completely torn after 6 pages of debate so I have decided to go with the every other one plan.

Release one eat one.

I will catch another the next time I put jugs out and he will be eaten.

I could probably go with this, but I have killed a big one and honestly don't know if I could do it again...

No problem with eating them, I have and they're good. However I throw them back once they get a certain age. More than enough small and midsize ones around.

No one said it wasnt legal to kill. The OP just said he respected the idea that the turtle might be pretty old so he let it live. I can agree with this mindset. There is no need to kill it. He didnt set the traps out for turtles. Why not just let it go?

If the turtle was harming something or was in an area that it shouldnt be, yes remove it.

As someone said in another thread, this might not be the case for long with LDWF

In Louisiana, it will. If my memory serves me correctly, there are some kind of "special circumstances" that Louisiana received.

I can tell you all this, I caught 5 last year and released all but one of them. Point being, there are more than you think/see.

I caught one I happened to see in a ditch. It was the size of a silver dollar. The others were big enough to eat but I already had enough "Common Snapping Turtle" in the freezer or waiting to be killed/cleaned so I just figured I'd spare them for someone to catch/enjoy when they're 50+ lbs.

I know where a bunch of these are as well. We catch them every time we bait jugs with cut shad. Are they endangered? How old are they at this size? For comparison I'm 6'-1" 250 sitting on front of that boat.

I prefer the meat on softshells to any other turtle, but the yield on them is much lower than on a snapping turtle (either kind). The size you show there is about the smallest I'll keep. Smaller than that and you don't get a lot of meat for the effort of cleaning one. They clean really easy, and 2 that side will make a fine meal for a family, with some left over.

And who let you put Ultra in a boat?
