Is it legal to shoot a crossbow in your backyard?

I received a crossbow for Christmas and want to shoot it in my backyard. My back yard is fairly large with a 6' fence surrounding it. I have neighbors on all 3 sides. I bought a target yesterday and want to sight it in and shoot it occasionally throughout the week. Or does anyone know of anywhere around Mandeville to target practice with a crossbow.

it may be legal but i would say that you need a better backstop than a board fence to be shooting a deadly weapon, especially one you have never used before. even veteran hunters have arrows break or deflect and in a neighborhood this is just asking for it.

I don't think it is illegal but I would be careful. Those crossbows are strong and will send an arrow right on through a fence and keep on trucking.

how about this: put a piece of plywood against your house and then put your target in front of that if you're confident enough that you won't have a stray bolt every now and again.

I shot my house doing that a couple of years back. It was a random aluminum arrow, and I just let it stay there until the season was over

my brother did that same shite right after claiming that he doesn't miss and so putting the target in front of the fence was fine. i moved the target in front of my shed anyway so he wouldnt shoot my neighbors. next time we shoot he shoots one right into the shed.

My backyard is small but I still do it. ~50ft from my back door to the fence with neighbors on every side. I put 26" crossbow bag target in front of the fence and plink away with no issues

Sure. Have at it.

Just kidding. I'd try to find someplace safer.

You might try elevating yourself to simulate a climber or ladder stand. Shots would not be parallel to the ground and thus safer.

It takes only 1 malfunction on the operator or crossbow and 'I am really sorry' just won't cut it. Find a safe place and enjoy your shooting without worrying about hurting someone or something.

Thanks for the replies. I was surprised there wasn't one disability joke. I went over to a friend's house this afternoon to sight in the crossbow since his house doesn't backup to another house. After 8 shots I ended up with the grouping below at 20 yards.
