If you were in the market for a plinking firearm, what would you buy?

Based on ammunition prices? I know there has been a lot of volatility the last few years.

Probably a henry lever action .22lr just because i don't already have one. Can't go wrong with a ruger 10/22 either. Just for plinking it is hard to beat a .22lr

When I think of plinking the first caliber I always think of is .22lr, and a 10/22 is one of my favorite rifles to shoot in .22. The S&W 15-22 is another fun .22 to plink with.
10/22 for accuracy shooting
15-22 for speed shooting

Just came home with a Henry Golden Boy 22 last week and I love it. 22 is a bit easier to find now days (for now atleast) and you can shoot a bulk pack of 500 for $25 and have fun all day.

I 2nd the Smith and Wesson 15-22 for plinking. My daughter is 6 and loves to shoot it. I also love to shoot it. hell just thinking about how much fun her and I have shooting mine, I am going to order her one with the pink "camouflage" design.

The 10-22 shoots just as fast?

I was thinking .22lr, but isn't ammo hard to find, or is that not the case anymore? I've never owned a .22 so I know very little about it.

CZ 455 American chambered in 22lr.

Not a problem anymore. Cabela's and my local gun store have been stocked with a good selection on .22. The price isn't down to what it was but it is close.

I have a 10/22 and a 15-22. Can't go wrong with either one.

I would agree that the 10-22 is a little more accurate. But for plinking or target shooting, the 15-22 is gonna be plenty accurate.
With any .22 LR rifle you'll have to try various brands to find out which is more accurate in your rifle. There will be a noticeable difference in your groups comparing WalMart Vaue Packs to CCI Tactical or CCI MiniMags.
This image is from a thread over on the S&W forum - supposed to be 50 yard groups. LINK

Hard to beat the new .17 Cal M2 thats also compatible with the .22 Cal. More firepower, but still a plinking machine!

I have a 10/22 and a15-22.
I've completely redone the 10/22. Only left that's stock is the frame. Pretty certain it would produce the same grouping that dawg's link showed. It's awesome.
I love the 15-22 probably just as much however. Plus the 15-22 has the adjustable stock so it fits the kids just as well and is a great gun for them to learn with.

OR CZ 455 American Combo, then you'll have .22lr and .17hmr covered.

I love a good 22 wheel gun for plinking. You can shoot pretty much anything out of it. Shorts. Longs. LR's. Colibris. Shot shells. Ruger Single Six or Single Ten or Heritage Rough Rider if you are on a budget.

If I didn't already have a lever action 22 I'd get a Henry SilverBoy.
To me, auto loaders are boring. Just my simple minded opinion.
The next gun I want to buy is a 32 caliber muzzleloader, which I want to use for squirrel hunting. But my wife is about to be out of a job, so I'm putting it on hold.
Eta; more on topic, a Ruger Single Six is also an incredible gun for plinking.

Not arguing your point because I have never shot either gun. But, this guy (in video) with a UTG red dot scope on his friend's 15-22 throws an apple in the air and hits it, along with a bunch of other targets he shot. He uses seven different brands of 22LR.
