I love the .270 because it's practically the same round. But when it comes down to it, there's more choices for the .308/.311/30-06 in bullet weights.
Not that I ever actually use that. If it's just a deer rifle, there's a lot of rounds that would do pretty much equally well. Any or the .260-.300+ rounds will do an admirable job of turning a deer into table fare almost instantly as long as the velocity is right and the weight is not too high.

Really got nothing that says one does more than another on deer. Just love the variety of rounds with the .308 and the short action. Highly versatile.
But I hunt with my 30-06 because my .308 weighs a freaking ton.
