I truly don't understand why anyone would choose a revolver over a semi-auto for a self defense gun.
This should be fun.

Kinda like a logger choosing a crosscut saw over a chainsaw.

I truly don't understand the need for people to immediately recommend these puny guns when they hear girl. My girlfriend is about as small as they come 5'1" 120 lbs and I wouldn't let her shoot my single stack 9 until she had plenty of rounds through a glock 19. And by plenty of rounds I mean atleast 2 range trips. In the end my glock 19 is her favorite gun to shoot and is extremely proficient with it.
Small guns are a major hindrance. They are far harder to operate, harder to shoot well, low capacity and most often have low terminal effects due to chamberings like the 380.
With that being said I currently carry a glock 43 everyday during the summer because I can appendix carry it with a spare mag under a tshirt. I am not saying those guns don't have a place. But he specifically stated the guns main use would be inside of a house or inside of a car. No need for concealment. Therefor no need to limit the usability of the gun.
My opinion, and it is just that, is that most first time shooters, women and many men shooters struggle with revolvers due to their inherently heavy trigger pull. It's not normaly a gun I recommend to first time shooters. They can also often be a handful in loadings like 38spl for ppl who may be recoil shy.
To answer your question I think there are plenty of options for your sister to look at. Glock 19, smith & wesson M&P, Springfield xd, sig 320. All great guns to have her look at and feel and see which fits her the best.

Never could bring myself to appendix carry with it pointing at my junk. I carry the 43 at the 3 or 4 o'clock position.

Yeah it would definitely be a shitty day. But it just works so well. Minimizing manipulating the gun in and out of the holster is how I justify it to myself. I figure if my gun is securely in a hard molded kydex holster covering the trigger guard the chance of it going off is probably about zero.

I don't know how I missed this thread but I want to bump so I can give this man a pat on the back for an excellent post.
Small guns are not easy to shoot. Period. They are simply a compromise for the purpose of being carried comfortably when concealed.

Glock 17 and visit the range once a month with a box or two of ammo and she'll be fine for home use.

Might as well ask "Ideal handgun for a blind man with a missing pinky finger"
Give her advice, but let the final decision be on her.

Again......
Explain why anyone would choose:
over this:
for self defense.
You are handicapping yourself.

Its not, because anybody with any sense will admit a Glock 19 is a much better self defense weapon than an Airweight .38 revolver.

The Smith 642/442 is tiny, takes up little space in a car console, front pocket or purse, so easily concealed, can be fired from inside a pocket without fear of hammer snag, lightweight, no need for cocking, ideal reliability, simplicity and packs plenty of punch.
It is the ideal car gun because you can keep it in the console in a cheap Uncle Mike's size 3 holster and drop it in your pocket or purse when you are in a bad neighborhood and nobody will know it is there.
Accuracy and recoil sucks, but is perfect for what it's designed for.

All of this can be said for the Glock 19, 26, and 43.
and the Glock is still a better self defense weapon.
Size comparison for Airweight vs Glock 26

I recently bought my 1st handgun which is a Glock 19. What helped me decide on the best handgun for me was going to shooting range where I could rent and shoot different guns. That helped me find the gun I felt most comfortable holding and shooting.

Do they make Glocks look like shite on purpose?

meh...prettiness doesn't matter to me. I'm more interested in how well I can run it in a self defense/combat situation.
And IMHO Glocks do very well in this.

You know what's funny, Gaston?
Glock's first name is Gaston.

You hit the nail on the head T.A.B., hard to beat a glock. There is a reason why most PD's use glock. Glock also has the lowest barrel centerline to thumb grip for recoil control. Lots of custom parts to reduce recoil and custom fit to your taste. If the 9mil is to light, jump to the .40cal or .45 and now you got something.
