For a guy whose dad died when he was a baby, I likely would never have learned about the outdoors if it weren't for my Great Uncle. Thanks to him, I got to experience a very old way of life in South Louisiana and learned a ton as a kid/teen.

Now that I am teaching my own brood of youngsters, I understand how much work it was for him

I always thought he was just letting me tag along.

So much more effort/time/prep than fishing on your own. Setting up new lines, undoing snags, unhooking fish....I'm luck to get to fish at all

I now know how much he sacrificed to pass on a way of life and teach me.

I'm glad to make the same sacrifice so my kids can experience the same.

You are doing it right. As a man with 3 daughters, it's tiresome and frustrating at times. Prep for 3 days, for a trip scheduled to last 1 day, that ends up lasting 30 minutes due to someone getting sick, tired, mad, frustrated, etc. It's worth it in the end. Every time one of them does something small for herself without my help, that's when the satisfaction comes. It might be short-lived and infrequent, but those little moments make it worth it. Keep it up.

Lot of work, but nothing like getting to trash talk your 5 year old son and your dad at the same time while you are catching fish. To see both of them throw almost identical fits is priceless.

I wish I had recorded Tigerdeacon Jr. throwing his pole down and kicking over his chair after he lost a fish.

And then we had the day that his Ironman combo caught catfish after catfish and I got skunked. He told that story for a month. Punk kid.

It all becomes about the kids.

Last spring, I'm bank fishing with my 5 year old, and eventually just throw a drop shot on my pole and set it down to help him fish.

We walk down the bank, me casting and him retrieving, and he's tearing up the bass with a crankbait...having a blast.

From a distance of about 150yds, I hear my pole go "splash". Never saw that pole again

Must have been a big fish, to drag that pole in the water and across 15ft of 1-2ft water to disappear forever.

I've got 2 boys (16mths and 1mth) old... cant wait to put in work so they can learn like I did. Sure it will be frustrating but very rewarding. Then when they are old enough to do the field plots and brush blinds, all I gotta do is show up

You uncle sounds like a great guy

I got a small taste of what my dad put up with when I took some buddies fishing who had never fished before. And they at least knew how to cast and bait a hook.

Same here. Actually it is now when I take my dad fishing that I have to teach him. when he taught me. I hope I have the patience with my kiddos.

same here. Took my older brother 38 and his son 15yrs old fishing out of Dularge. Neither can cast so I had them use some old zebcos. Between hitting everything in the boat with their corks and weights including cowling, console and eachother. It was still a good day after my brother hooked a big bull. Now catchin the trolling motor and lower unit is another story. I just felt bad for my nephew bc he grew up without really knowing the outdoors

three girls. I know your pain. I spend most trips with them ducking, grabbing rods and yelling "watch out for that hook." but it's worth it.

Both my Mother-in-law and wife love to deer hunt, so it can happen. I plan on teaching my daughter as well.

Another good story I wanted to share, I recently had the privilage of being at our friend's stocked pond when another buddy brought his 3 year old. He hooked and caught his first sac-a-lait!!! It was about 1lb. Needless to say, he was a proud papa! It was a great moment for all of us to share. Great job OP and others!

I actually grew up the same way and now experiencing this with my boy. Hunting and fishing isn't the extent of it though. We have a small farm at the house because I know he loves it and it's teaching him a lot. It surely is a bitch at times keeping it all up!!!

they call it a way of life for a reason. We pass these skills down from generation because one day one generation is going to need them. Living off the land and defending yourself will be skills necessary to survive one day. If you don't believe that than you slept through Western Civ.

But its also a bunch of fun, so there's that too

I wish I'd learned. Father never did any of that or taught me. Always feel like I missed out.
