100% agree with the OP

I don't get it either

You can add the fear of hogs to this as well

I don't get why I'm afraid if them either. I just know they send shivers down my spine. My brother, who pretty much got me into the outdoors, freaking loves snakes and I'll go out of his way to catch one if he sees one. So it's a natural fear for me. I didn't grow up with people telling "RUN!" at the sight of a snake. So definitely not "taught" to fear snakes as the OP suggests. If you can't understand an inherent fear of something, then I guess I can't help you, it's really not that hard to understand a fear. It's quite common for people to be afraid of many things, whether you think it's rational or not. It's easy to be a billy bad arse and call me a pansy but it's not something I can help. I'd rather not be afraid of them cause I actually don't like the feeling I get when I see a moccasin.

Yellow jackets. Screw a yellow jacket.

I hate to see people kill harmless snakes, but I don't lose any sleep over it.

Fear of snakes is intrinsic in all mammals. Also in marsupials. Your rodent ancestors were deathly afraid of snakes because they were snake food. There's been studies done on this that prove that. You may not be scared of them after having learned not to be, but if you'd never seen one before, your first reaction would not be to walk up and pet it. Even having controlled it and maybe even learning to love the bastards you still have a healthy respect for the ones you know are a danger to you.

Let me ask you a question: Have you ever seen a horse react to a snake? I have (while riding it mind you) and a horse is 1000x a snakes size yet a horse is absolutely deathly afraid of a snake. And is isn't just this horse is afraid but this one isn't. They all are and they aren't afraid because they were raised to be afraid. It's a natural instinct.

I can't explain it but I hate a snake just as if I was a horse.

Smart enough to come back when you let them outside. Dogs on the other hand...

Yeah. It amazes me how many of these so-called Alpha Males who post on this board are girlie scared of snakes and other critters, and show off their manliness by bragging about killing completely harmless, and beneficial, non-venomous snakes. Pussies.
