We have a built-in whirlpool bath in our master bath and there is empty space around the tub where the box is built and for some reason there is about an 8" gap around the drainage pipe going down and now a family of raccoons as decided to make this their home.

I can seal up the gap with some plywood or scrap lumber, but I know they are in there during the day and come out at night (they keep eating my cat food). So is there something that I can throw up in there during the day that will be sure to scare them out and then I can seal it up?

I do not want to seal it up while they are in there for obvious reasons.

I tried trapping and they tore the trap up somehow. Guess I could buy another one and try again but I still need to seal that gap up so this doesn't happen again.

What kind of trap? Post up on porch. Consume adult beverages. Wait. Pew pew?

it looked like the others helped the one in the trap escape because they ripped the fricking piece that connects the door to the pan completely off

smart little frickers

thought about this as well, but I don't have a high powered pellet gun

I live in the city

Make a cone out of wire mesh with a smaller hole to exit. Seal off the hole with mesh with the only exit as the narrow cone.

Hopefully they can't get back in. At least I've used that for squirrels

I have a soft spot for racoons. Whenever I need to catch and kill one in a livetrap I make sure to kill quickly. Spend too much time watching it and I end up taking it somewhere and releasing it.

They can be some incredibly destructive pests though.

This post didn't help you at all with your problem and for that I'm not really sorry.

I had a huge raccoon living in my attic for a week. They keep coming back because its a nice quiet place for them to sleep during the day time. I made it very inhospitable for that POS. I was blaring music and kept the lights on in my attic. I was also shooting a pellet gun at him every chance I got. Finally one day he decided this guy is nuts and never came back. I quickly boarded up his access point and my problem was solved.

I've also heard moth balls work.

I've trapped and released 3 raccoons from my house in the 5 years I have lived here.

Never had to deal with a family though. There is at least 4 of them.
