Prays sent to all.

I had a friend that was killed duck hunting by his uncle. He was 13 years old at the time. They were picking up decoys from a pirogue. Band of birds dropped down on them and the uncle told him to stay down, he didn't.

To this day, when the hunt is over, it's over. All guns are unloaded before anyone leaves the blind.

No, released after questioning. I feel bad for the kid if it all turns out to be just a horrible accident (which it looks like).
He will live with the death on his shoulders for the rest of his life.

no doubt.....

never will forget the scene near belle chasse during teal season in early 80s when a kid pretty much decapitated his best friend.

I'm not a fan of walking around with a loaded gun if I don't need to. Especially if it's more than one person. I'd have a difficult time making a upland bird type of hunt. It would take some getting used to.

Tripping on something while walking in the woods isn't all that hard to do. I'd rather miss out on a deer that pops up on the trail than take my life or someone else's on a freak accident.

most of the time.... the guns are loaded or closed until dogs are on point..

working with flushing dogs - different story.. different gig - not my gig....

I am particular who we hunt with.. even more so bird hunting.

I knew the shooter a little bit.. was my age - played ball against him as a kid - we were somewhat friends...

ran into him at a few camps over the years....

he was never never the same.. remember running into him 2, 3 and 10 years after.... he looked like a different person each time.

grandpa was real tight with families of both

That is why muzzle control and situational awareness matter so much all if the time. You have to control it even in unexpected circumstance. It has to be second nature. That's what grandpas and daddies are thre for, to make sure you do it right until it is like breathing. Then you can go on your own.

At 6 y/o received a BB gun for Christmas was warned about pointing at anyone. A crazy uncle I had came over and was picking, pointed said unloaded BB gun at uncle. Promptly had gun removed from my possession by father and got the arse whipping of a lifetime. 41 years later I am the most paranoid individual about muzzle placement.
And today they say whippings are not proper for disciplining children

In HS we had 1 buddy (I think if I remember right but I wasn't there) trip and fire right into the back of another buddy. Didn't kill him, but messed him up pretty bad.

I'm heading DTR today, so I'm sure I'll find out what's the deal. If it happened in Nairn, I'm more than sure I'll know them or their parents.

I lost a good friend in a duck blind about 13 yrs ago, I wasn't there - sucks. good guy. rip JR.

We were running rabbits in N. Bossier Parish once and the dogs chased one toward me. I followed it for a short bit and pulled the trigger.

A kid that was with us, maybe 9 years old, popped up about 10 yards past where I shot the rabbit and my barrel must have pointed right at him at one time. I still have horrible thoughts to this day about that, and how close it actually was. Being aware of where every one is located is extremely important.

dove hunting this year I've had a low flying dove between me and another hunter. I didn't shoot.

There was 2 or 3 times where I saw a low flying dove and knew they were doing to shoot and turned my back and was pelted.

I came up and said "what the frick are you doing shooting at me, you have evidently moved closer and this is not right"

I was so pissed I almost walked off the field

Sad mistake. He won't be right for a while (assuming he was a decent kid before)

No such thing as too careful
