In about 7 trips in 2016 I'm managed to boat a 18" trout, a 24" red, and a 9" trout. I've literally hooked and lost more fish than I've landed.
This weekend was supposed to be the weekend that I redeem myself at PaddlePalooza. Friday afternoon a tree fell and put a hole in the girlfriend's house, trip cancelled. I'm currently looking into other hobbies.

That was painful to watch - I know you were frustrated to not be able to get them to bite.
I think I'd have just sat down and drank a beer, relaxed, and trolled back away from them. They looked pretty active so a moving bait pulled through there might have gotten one to bite.
Good thing about it is, there's always tomorrow and looks like you know where the fish are.

Painful to watch.
I honestly don't think it had anything to do with them just not wanting to bite on that rig that day - it had everything to do with presentation. You're just not going to have the speed, accuracy, and action with that setup that you'd have with a baitcaster and gold spoon.
This is so not true. Fishing reds used to be my main passion, and I was pretty damn good at it if I should say so myself. And my weapon of choice was a Calcutta and a 3/4 oz. gold spoon (Johnson silver minnow - no trebles). It was easy to cast in any conditions and made distance and accuracy much simpler as well. And the added size didn't affect hookups at all, even with smaller fish. The added weight didn't spook the fish when sight fishing either. My buddy always threw lighter spoons, and there was no difference in our rate of hookups or the number of fish we caught.

Sight fishing usually involves light baits, so that's why I stray away from the baitcasters. I had a spinner tied on to a baitcaster, which i used some, but it didnt help with the fish

My 5 saltwater trips this year are as follows...
2 days in Cabo. 2 yellowfin under 20lbs and a mackerel, busted Iphone.
2 days in Costa Rica. 1 grouper. Busted Iphone #2
1 day in Grand Isle. 2 mangroves. Stolen rod and spun prop.
I'm taking up basket weaving. So long OB.

If it wasn't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all.

They were both in lifeproof cases, they have yet to make a 34proof case.

I vomited twice trying to watch that.

Like maybe a cast net.
Damn, I hate that I watched that. It will likely be my dream tonight.

I've never fished reds with this philosophy. If you're in an area just full of fish where you know you'll easily limit, then maybe I can understand wanting to entirely sight fish. But I've caught far more reds on blind casting than I've caught sighting. When I used to fish Bay St. Louis, sight fishing was a non-starter - I'd tear them up blind casting the shoreline but virtually never spot a wake or swirl. And the reds always hit the spoon the instant it hit the water - no follows or taps or bumps - instant like it landed inside their mouth, or nothing. But even fishing Delacroix where we saw a lot of activity and spotted fish when the water was clear, I'd catch more just blind casting in between sightings. People who solely sight fish are driving right by a lot of fish.

No. I was fishing some deeper structure for trout and they were sucked to the bottom this weekend.

A fly would have been pretty legit right there. I'll be down here solo for the next couple of days looking for something similar.
