i've got a pond that is starting to have a problem with willow trees. last year i sprayed with 2,4-D Amine and it "killed" the ones i wanted to. now this year they have resurrected and are greening back up. i don't want to kill all of them because they do provide some good habitat for my bass. i REALLY don't want to hurt the bass as they are really doing well. the trees are standing in water.
is there any spray-applied herbicide i can safely use or do i need to cut those i want gone and wipe the cut end with something?

A chainsaw works well. At my previous house I had a big willow tree in my front yard near the street. My neighbor hated it so much he volunteered to cut it down and replace it with 3 "better" trees. You need a willow hater like that at your disposal.

they are all over the "damn side" of my pond and out into standing water. this is the deep side of the pond that slopes down to 12'-14' pretty quick. they probably grown out to +/- 20' from the water line. probably take up 200'-250' of shore line length. keep in mind the pond is 3 acres and i've been able to keep them contained to just this area.
all of them are >3" diameter.
i'd prefer to kill them and leave them to rot.

Cut a ring around the trunk, deep enough to get to the heart wood. They wont re-leaf the next year.

It's called girdling

They'll probably just backbud at the cut and sprout a thousand new trunks if you girdle them.

thanks for the pertinent input on a topic that is probably way above your IQ. go back to the shallow end of the gene pool.

basal spray with remedy and diesel. Or cut trees down and treat cut stumps shortly after cutting with remedy + diesel.

cutting them with no treatment will only lead to sprouts.

Well, probably not. but if you do it right there will be very little overspray. It's a low volume app but there might be a better option in your case IDK. You might girdle and paint some chem in the girdle, similar to hack and squirt????

Cut them down and paint the trunks(cut surface) with a mixture of 24d and roundup. Do not dilute the mixture.

Drill holes in the trunk and fill them with straight 2,4-D and Roundup.

Drill a hole into them at an angle and fill the hole with 24d made into a slurry with old motor oil. They will die.

That's what I was going to suggest. Cut 3" above waterline, drill with a 1/2" bit a few inches deep, use a syringe to squirt straight Triclopyr into the holes, repeat application 2 weeks later.

This won't help you but you could plant them in my yard and they will be dead in a matter of months....
