At what point do you leave the dog at the house?

Fwiw my old black lab would tread water in 18F to hunt with me.

My male yellow lab starts shivering at 40 degrees. I think he just is a pussy.
My new black lab doesnt seem to mind the cold.

Also, I've noticed his coat doesn't seem to shed the water as well as my black labs

I'm no hunting dog expert, but there is no way a wet dog at temps below 20 is a good thing.

Hell, I would think their thick coat would make it worse since they will never get dry. IMHO, and I have no idea what I'm talking about.

As long as they're fed a good quality feed they they can handle it a hell of lot better than we can.

It's supposed to be 14 here tonight. If I had a lab it would be inside. My stepdad is a stickler for no dogs inside, but I think its in the mid 20's there tonight and when I left he mentioned his lab would be inside for the night (in the laundry room in a kennel). I don't now how cold is to cold, but I don't see why it would hurt to put them in a kennel inside for the night when extreme temps hit.

What do the people in Minnesota and Missouri do with their labs? They hunt em.

Dogs are toughhhhhhhhh especially to hunt.

WE have hunted our labs in extreme cold - ice sickles hanging off their nuts cold. Literally ice sickles hanging off a dogs nut. Of course our dogs were acclimated to cold living in the north.

I now live in Houston and would not take my dog form here to Nebraska to hunt in that extreme cold without a vest and I would be running the blind heater for warmth between retrieves.

The weather in LA is not going to hurt the dog as long as they can get out of the water between retrieves and dry off.

The shivering thing, if mild, is just the dog.

Labs handle cold weather fine. But throw water in the mix, and that's a different story.

My chocolate pup went out at 5am to do his business and it was the fastest he's ever run back to the door! It was 23 outside.

What does this even mean? How well would you handle being in sub freezing water and how long do you think you could take it? dogs can handle eating carrion better than we can as well, but that doesn't mean they should do so.

I'd think the dog would fare better with some sort of apparel and being given the chance to get out of the water during the hunt.

As long as the dog has been allowed outside enough for his winter coat to come in, he should be fine.
In recent years, we've all become softer allowed our labs inside.
Now they're softer too.

The dog wants to work.

Every dog is different

If it's too cold for my dog it's too cold for me.

Shivering doesn't mean it's too cold. Or that they mind it...

A wet boat or atv ride is worse than the hunt on a dog

Mine woke up ready to go.
Slept outside and was balls to the walls this am.

Stop being pussies.
Dogs are animals, they deserve much more credit than some of you give them.
