I typically hand the officer my permit along with my license and registration.

Nah. I'll just let him grab my paperwork from under my gun if he wants. Last time the guy took the gun out, unloaded it, put it in my back seat, asked me how I liked it and if I shot it often, if I could hit anything with it, said he was going to buy one for his wife but never had the chance to shoot one yet, and told me to slow down. I was pulled over for going 15 over in a school zone and got a warning from NOPD. How many here can say that? Probably not anybody who is taping traffic stops and not letting an officer grab paperwork out of the glove box.

Such voluntary acquiescence is alien to me, perhaps as my view is to you.
I will leave the Constitutional angle alone and just say that at a minimum there are things I own that are nice enough that I don't want some clueless public servant fumbling around with them beside a road.

Not sure if it still is but it use to be the law that you have to tell the officer if you have a gun concealed and you have a permit. This is in TN.

He probably doesn't legally have the right to do that. I can't remember if he asked me if he could or told me he was going to but I remember him saying he was gonna do it.

There really is no standard, and honestly, LEO's can do what they want.
That said, if I'm cop dealing with the GP that could have a weapon, I would do the same.

People are generally easy to read and you can make a quick judgement call on how you need to handle a given LEO. In my case, the gun is on top of my paperwork if I'm in my car so I don't have a choice. I'm not grabbing a gun if the cop doesn't explicitly state he's ok with it.

Professionalism and courtesy go a long way for both the officer and general public. I use common sense but err on the side of caution if I have any doubt when weapons are involved.

For awhile nopd was seizing guns found in traffic stops - you had to go back and prove you really owned said gun
