guided trip for specks recommendations

my son turns 18 the first part of may... I would like to send him and a friend on a guided trip down south Louisiana way. He is an avid freshwater fisherman, mostly bass, but has never been on a speck/red trip. anywhere in south Louisiana would be an option and would prefer to have them put on some specks, maybe some reds. the weekend of may 1 would be perfect. (from reading on there I see that the water conditions may not be optimum at some places...)
would like to look into staying down there Friday night the 30th and fishing all day Saturday...
any advice/recommendations on areas to look into and/or guides/guiding services to contact appreciated...

With short notice, you might not have many choices. Most good guides book up many months in advance.

Travis Miller out of Dularge.

First cast charters in Shell Beach. Mark Munson. I go with him several times a year. Great guide and a lot of fun.

You can’t have a bad time with captain jakamo. He’s got a new camp across the street from his dock

OP - Define South LA? You looking SWLA / Big Lake Area or SELA / Grand Isle & Venice areas, etc.?

Mark is a good option for sure. Great guy and works hard to put you on the fish.
I will add:
Cpt Chris Robert out of the Rigolets. 228.284.9502. Chris catches some damn fine trout most months of the year.
Cpt. Dude out of Hopedale. 504.813.3474. Dude has a few places to stay the night before and or after your trip.
If you want to simply catch fish, contact Bayou Charters. Charlie and his crew catch fish. You may catch as many reds and you can reel-in, but you will catch fish with Bayou Charters.

I suppose really just anywhere from Big Lake to Grand Isle/Venice...
I know there are NEVER any guarantees, but is any area better than others in general terms, in the first part of May, and considering the water conditions?

This is your guy. Fished with him last year. He grew up on the marsh he fishes and works his butt off to put you on fish. We had a large group of us that went out on several boats. Our boat came back with the most fish by far.

This is a Ford vs Chevy topic. People swear by where they fish the most or grew up fishing.
I grew up fishing Grand Isle and have never fished Venice.
I have also taken 4 charters to big lake. Each one was 4-5 boats and two days. I haven’t even caught a half a limit adding them all up. Been straight skunked two days in a row on two of the trips.
I have also had bad trips to grand isle, but I have NEVER been skunked two days in a row when fishing on my own and never been skunked with a guide in grand isle.
If you want to go and have the closet thing to a guarantee of catching fish, my suggestion is grand isle. But rumor has it Venice is the place for big specks and Big Lake use to be the place for big specks.

Travis Lovell in Dularge. He will put you on fish. He was recommended to me by another poster. We have been with him the last 2 years and left them biting each time. My kids and I had a ball.

Sounds like you went with what’s known as cell phone guides

I’m not going to say the guides name because I really don’t think it was them. But I will say it is one of the bigger / well known services down there, that came very highly recommended.

I fished with W in Big Lake for over 8 years. Never had a bad trip. I've fished out of Venice several times and only had one good trip. It all depends on the weather and conditions. I am not knocking Venice, but I seemed to spend a lot of time riding in the boat, while Big Lake I spend more time fishing. If the wind is blowing 20 mph and the water is dirty, most reputable Big Lake guides will tell you to cancel and reschedule. W definitely will. If you want to catch trout, I would pick W (Jeremy Waldrip) on Big Lake over any other guide on any body of water. He lives there and knows the water. He is fairly busy on weekends, so try to book early.
