I used to work with about 15 guatemalans. Good fun-natured people and hard workers. I was amazed when I found out from the mexicans that the guatemalans weren't speaking spanish, I always wondered why they could barely understand my broken spanish

Awesome pics, thanks for sharing. What's that bull dodo puking up? Looks like little red crabs or something.

Not sure. The camera makes me look like a hell of a photographer, but I had to do some zooming to capture that. In one of those, he had just spit the hook a split second before, so I maintain it is the best picture of a free swimming mahi mahi known to man,

We have been looking at going to Guatemala since a friend of ours owns a hotel down there. How much does the fishing run?

Ours was a big package deal that covered meals, booze, transportation, golf, a few different hotels, etc. I did ask around the dock though, and it sounds like 1400 is the going rate for 6 folks.

What does that cover? How long are the trips down there?

A full day. It just really depends. You're in the Pacific in 3 minutes. Sometimes the sails and marlin are out at 6 miles. Sometimes they're at 50. We left the dock at 6:15 and were back by 5.

Sure.

It was 3K per man, and included everything except airfare, tips, and a couple of meals here and there.

We flew into Guatemala City and met our translator/guide, and he had a little minibus with a driver. He drove us down to Puerto San Jose after a quick lunch in Guatemala City. Once in Puerto San Jose, we went to our villas which were in a gated subdivision guarded by some heavily armed private security. The private villas were similar to your standard nice Orange Beach/Fort Morgan beach house with badass pools as seen here:

Never saw another resident in the neighborhood the whole time.

They're also on canals, but too shallow for our boats:

The house staff brings you appetizers and beer/liquor, basically anything you want. You eat breakfast and dinner at the Villa, great food, lobster, steak, mahi, shrimp, and everything is served with guac and chimichurri type stuff. It was really good.

The driver picks you up after breakfast and takes you to the marina, just a few minutes down the road. Fish all day, burgers/steaks/shrimp for lunch on the boat, all the beer and liquor you want, toss the deckhands a tip at the end of the day, back to lodge for a swim, drinks and dinner.

After 3 or 4 days of fishing (your choice) they take you to a 5 Star Golf Course and Resort called La Reunion. Place is freaking insane, sits between a few volcanos, built using middle eastern oil money. We had our own villas, each with its own infinity pool and hot tub. Great food there (was on us, but steak and a bunch of wine was like 18 bucks american), got a massage, played some golf.

The last day, they take you to Antigua, Guatemala, which is this old Spanish town from the 1500s. Looks a lot like parts of the Carribbean. They put you up at a badass old monastery from 1538 that is now a 5 Star hotel/museum called Casa Santo Domingo. It was one of the cooler parts of the trip. They just have 400 year old religious relics laying around on coffee tables and stuff. Definitely a "hands in your pockets" sort of spot.
View from my room:

One night there, then off to the airport. I really recommend it. If any of you are interested in the outfit we went with, let me know and we can take it offline.

:tldr: Go to guatemala, fish, play golf, see the old stuff.

Made a trip there last year with Allure, caught 102 sails in 2 days between 2 boats. Awesome place for a man trip.
