If you have to live in a house on stilts, why bother?

The video concentrates on the destruction but I'm as interested in the houses that survived. How and why?

Ok, that thing I said earlier in the week about visiting "ground zero" from Cat3 Fran in the 90's having more damage, I take it back...

I have pictures of my camp. Built 2015. The structure looks fine in pics but we haven’t been inside. I am expecting ceiling and wall damage but who knows. The structure has OSB/plywood on every wall and ceiling inside and the outside is OSB and hardi.
We are past the store towards the east end.

Right after Katrina, to build a camp you had to go through extreme measures for FEMA. I’m guessing it is still the same. At the time, I was thinking it was way overboard. Now I’m glad a cussed ever single clip I had to put on that camp after seeing the destruction around us.

There probably isn't a place on earth built to handle a hurricane as well as new grand isle camps. They have to be bomb proof to get insurance on them

I don’t know why, but seeing these kinds of messages over and over again are starting to bug me. It’s like people are trying to blame the people who live there for the storm. Yes, they all greatly understand the risks of living someplace, or having a camp someplace where stilts are required.

Some people have lived here their entire lives, or spent a large majority of their free time out there, and that place and other places like it, is a place that a lot of people hold dearly. It’s a special place to a lot of people.

Sorry if I am being too sensitive, as I’m sure you didn’t mean it in the way that I am taking it, but I’m mainly pointing to the people who live out west or in New York who keep saying that kind of shite on social media.

My friend has a camp that was built pre Betsy. It has survived every storm since then including Ida. Lost do shingles on the roof but it’s still there.

We made it
Missing some roof but it’s still standing and only got 2.5 feet of water downstairs, I’ll call that a win

1/2 of my roof got ripped off, compared to others, I cant complain

Eta: If I am rebuilding the damaged roof myself, does it still have to meet the ordinances set by Grand Isle?yes im putting hurricane straps and the required hardware, but is that something they are actually going to check since its not a new build?

You have to have a permit to do anything but flush the toilet in GI.

Will they catch you is the only question.

Heading to Grand Isle tomorrow morning. Will report.

I’m not looking forward to what we’re going to see based on the footage we’ve seen so far

The City announced that Friday and Saturday from 7am to 7pm they are allowing residents/property owners in to secure their property, collect belongings, and assess damages. You’ll need to show proof of ownership, water bill, etc. one vehicle per property, no tractors, trailers, etc and I don’t believe you’re allowed to stay.
