First time down there in a couple of weeks for camping/fishing. Any tips on other things to do/not do around the area? Thanks in advance.

Fishing not going to be so good this time of year. You could try floundering.

Fishing won't be good. I'd opt for going to Chicot State Park or Fausse Point

Hell yes. The pits along hwy 1 hold lots and lots of trout this time of year. Easy to know which spots are holding fishing, just follow the herd.

Yes, bring a yak and fish the pits along Hwy 1 between Leeville and GI.

I'm also interested in the camping/surf fishing deal. When is the best time of year to go? What's the best species to target?

I assume specks on the break in the summer, similar to the beach outside cocodrie is good?

Is there anything that's good in the Fall when the weather is nicer/cooler?

Yep. Don't have to wait till the summer though. They usually start showing up on the beaches in the spring.

You can catch some huge bull redfish in the passes. I stick to hunting trout so I fish the marshes in the winter and the beaches in the summer.

How early will the specks be on the beach at GI. I would love to head down there in maybe late April or early May before it gets to be 110 degrees.

I don't fish with shrimp because I hate catfish.
