I'm looking for an alternative to crape Myrtle and Japanese magnolias. My neighbors have them and I need to one up.

Also just help in general. I need to be the alpha of the garden!

Loquat is a cool evergreen tree and you'll get the plums after a while

I like that one. Will a royal poinciana tree work here?

Bradford pears are putting on a hell of show right now, but they get big and can outgrow their place if not planned correctly

Flowering cherry trees are great when they bloom

Vitex

Magnolias, I don't care for the tree but make a pretty and fragrant flower

How big of a tree are you looking for?

wiki says south fla and rio grande valley of tejas so I dunno if there is enough of a "tropical" climate for it to sustain itself.

Nothing that will get over 6-7 ft. It's for our corners of the front garden.

Hard to beat a crepe myrtle, they flower almost the whole spring and summer

Weeping mulberry would be different

Sweet olives make a small white flower and smell great

mine too...they are common as hell, but the place really is beautiful right now...

ETA: have you thought about something like a redbud?...small tree that flowers and then has some pretty cool shaped leaves for the rest of the summer...

I love them but they break easy in stronger winds. There is a new variety out that looks just like the Bradford but stronger. Can't remember name right off.

It's a Cleveland Pear. Look identical but are stronger.

Japanese Maple fits your description but wont bloom. Nice red foliage though and a popular choice. Another option that will get a little larger but not much is the little gem magnolia. I'm sure I will think of a couple more later and I'll post them when I do but size wise the Japanese Maple will be hard to beat and they look good.

Is a referred to as a Japanese magnolia and purple magnolia so I assume that's what he means he doesn't want. Something close that would be different though is the star magnolia which looks close but blooms white.
