What food do yall bring for a three day hike? An ice chest is the only thing we will have to keep things cool.

If you are bringing an ice chest, it really should not be any problem, freeze your meat and put at bottom and carefully place everything else on top and limit the opening of the chest

Cheese sticks are good because they have individual plastic wrap so you don't soak it in melt water. Jerky and nuts are obvious. A really dense bread is good for hiking too.

Buy a couple of packs of Richard's smoked sausage and freeze it the night before you leave (assuming you're going to make a fire at night). It works out pretty great. No supplies needed, you can just roast over fire with a stick. And it's already smoked, so don't have to worry about undercooking and getting sick.

You got a pack mule tagging along?

We will be driving to different camp sites in Yosemite. So we will pack an ice chest and not planning on going into town to re-ice anything.

So you'll be in the park for 3 days, not going on a 3 day hike?
Posted on 5/20/17 at 9:48 pm to upgrayedd
If that floats your boat, then yes.
We will be in the park for 3 days doing several hikes. We don't hike for a living and was looking for some input from experienced people as far as what to bring to eat while only packing one time... Is that more detailed and clear?

Just saying there's a huge difference between planning for a 3 day hike and planning for being in the park for 3 days a doing some hikes during the day.

if its only for 3 days and you've got a vehicle and an ice chest you can pretty much cook whatever the frick you want. just don't open the ice chest every 5 minutes if you've got sushi you plan to eat on the last day. Or keep a second ice chest with nothing but ice that you don't open at all for a couple days and use that to re-stock the one you open every 5 minutes to get your beer out.

That is not a 3 day hike. My suggestion to you would be to skip the outdoors altogether and go to Disney.

You can pack just about anything. Not sure what cooking pots and stove you have access to though. Keep it simple.
Things that can cook over a fire. Hot dogs, steaks, baked potatoes are all very easy. Sandwich makings also good.
Just keep in mind bears can and will break into cars for tasty smelling people food. Use bear boxes if they have them.

Also be aware of fire bans. There could be a chance campfires are not allowed at certain times.

"Primitive" camping? I had some trouble finding an open campsite last time I went, but I didn't do reservations. If you have trouble finding one there is a state park up the dirt road that goes through the golf course. Nice secluded campsite that usually isn't full. And there are stores in the park. You can buy groceries.

Just freeze meals ahead of time. Did the same thing in Yellowstone and ate like kings. Flew with a ice chest full of frozen spaghetti, chili, red beans, and burger patties. Little Colman stove heated everything up nicely.
