Flying with guns into Canada

Has anyone here flown into Canada with guns? Taking a trip at the end of Sept. and want to go ahead and get everything lined up.

bro in law goes there quite frequently (w/o guns) for business. from what he has seen at customs he says it is MAJOR pita. remember, the people from the 51st state are real socialist

I went last year. There are forms that you can fill out with US Customs and with Canada's Border Patrol to expedite the process. That said, they still checked my guns going into Canada, and I still had to wait in line in Denver coming back into the States.
The outfitter we used had Brownings, Benellis and Berettas for rent. Next time, I'll go that route.

I sure hope not. In a perfect world I will be able to get everything right the first time and it will be a piece of cake. But I know better than that.

Just flew up there for a bear hunt at the end of June with 2 rifles. I found it to be a major pain and pretty expensive as well.

When they ask what you're going into Canada for, say "Hunting," do not say, "I"m hereto shoot Canadians." Guy that was traveling with us thought he'd make that joke, they didn't find it funny and he was brought back for questioning (only about 5 minutes). He was talking about geese, obviously, and they knew that, they were just being dicks (and his joke was bad, I admit it).

Really? I just got off the phone with the Canuck firearms people. She told me to fill out a 5589 in triplicate and call ahead to the airport I was flying into. She said some will pre-register you. And I saw somewhere it was a $25(CDN) fee. Good for 60 days.
What steps did you go through? I will certainly be calling them several more times before I head that way. We will be bringing two rifles. Is it better to bring them in one case or two?

That's exactly what we did. They still make you wait in line, xray your gun, open your case, identify the gun, ask you questions, etc.
I was expecting to just breeze on through, that wasn't the case.
And coming back into the states was worse.

One case and make sure it has a lock on it or else they will not let you fly with it. We filled out the forms beforehand as well and that did save a little time, but there are other forms that they make you fill out when you are checking bags as well. It also cost more to check the firearms than a normal bag as well (we flew Canadian airlines into Canada). If you let them know you are going specifically for hunting they don't ask many questions, but the whole process can be time consuming.

My dad almost lost his father's Colt service revolver by trying to "smuggle" it into Canada.
Mid 1980's, me, my dad and mom drive from NOLA to Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Drove from NOLA to Denver, then up through the US Rockies through the Canadian Rockies. Made many stops, saw many things (hiking, x-country skiing, glacier hiking, camping..... WONDERFUL TRIP!!!
At the border crossing, I guess my dad was not good at lying. They seized the pistol. Charged him a fine to get it back. Then they told him about the guy at the filling station a few miles back on the US side that would either hold it for you until your return or ship it back to your home.
They were actually quite professional, and nice (they didn't hafve to tell us about the shipping service).
Waved us through without checking after we went and shipped it....

We had a hidden panel in the RV above the Radio. You had to take off four screws to get to it. I remember that's were the guns and ammo went for the trip into Canada.

Wasn't a problem in 1999. Took bolt out, locked up, had form in case. Opened it, showed it, done. Ammo was kept separately. I think this was on Northwest Airlines?
Same coming back. I had more issues with rattling horns that I made up there,, lots and lots of questions, couple of times thru the X-ray machine. Then I pointed out that they didn't even match each other.
Took caped rack to local taxidermist in Saskatoon, he mounted and shipped to me, no problems, at all.

I guess a little extra time won't kill me. But it sure seems like a whole lot of fuss over nothing.
I was surprised to learn that you're not supposed to use TSA locks for firearm cases in the states. Is that the same in canada? I can just use regular locks and I will be ok?

From what the airline people told us, yes. Two of the snaps on our case locked with a key and that was all we needed... Also if you are bringing ammo I suggest putting it in the case with your guns so everything is in one place and that's all they will have to check.

I don't think you can fly with ammo on commercial airlines.
Definitely dont try and bring a pistol, don't even think about it. They will go bonkers if you have one.

Hell, they went bonkers when we told them we had pepper spray for bears. They confiscated it and we had to fill out paperwork that made us sound like hardened criminals.
You can buy pepper spray for bears in Canada too. WTF?

Like how long are we talking here? An hour worth of heartburn or like half a day? In the overall scheme, I guess it doesn't matter. I'll be there for two weeks, so even half a day won't kill me. I just want to know what to expect.
I know about the pistols already. I wanted to bring my 460, but that idea got shot down pretty quick.

have ya'll really had a problem? I've flown to Canada with firearms 5 times now and its super easy. I shot up just for a weekend last year. Its not as easy as flying domestically, which is just comically easy, I fly all over with a shotgun and it literally shortens my baggage line time usually because a lady will come ask whats in the case and I say firearm, and they expeditite you right through. One time I had to take a chit at an airport in nova scotia at 4am. I literally hadn't seen another soul in the airport so I made the mistake of leaving the gun case and running to the bathroom (was by myself). This led to a huge ordeal of being searched by customs for abandoning a bag (they were apparently actually monitoring those cameras all along), but I still made my flight.
