I was cleaning out a wood duck box a couple of days ago, and found a flying squirrel in it. It flew out of the box to an adjacent tree. I've lived on the natural levee of bayou Vermilion for years, never seeing a flying squirrel before. Have since learned they're an endangered species. Even though they're nocturnal, seems like I would have at least heard one. Anyone know what sound they make, if any?

We had a cat many years ago that had a trick for taking those little bastards out. They'd run up a tree and think she wouldn't follow them that high.

She brought us 24 flying squirrel tails in just a couple of years.

They make a shrill cry that sounds kind of like a high pitched cricket or grasshopper. If you ever hear it and see the squirrel (rare in the daytime) you will think it's from something other than the squirrel, more than likely. I had a family 'invade' my house several years ago, they are cute but tough to get rid of. They absolutely love eggs though (they need the calcium).

They are not endangered, maybe a rare subspecies.....but they are by no means endangered..,,

Protected and endangered are not the same thing

My grandpa used to catch them in box traps. He lived in Bunkie and worked the pumpjacks out there.

I had one as a pet when I was about 9 I think. It was pretty cool. It used to sleep in my shirt pocket a lot.

We get those in our Bluebird houses in Georgia and I've seen them in nest boxes in the nearby state forest. They are really not rare here and the serious birders I know absolutely despise flying squirrels because they wipe out nesting birds in the boxes and in the wild as well. There are several species and I think it is one specific species that may be endangered but I really don't know much other than the ones near our cats are definitely endangered.

I love those little guys. I used to have four of them as pets when I was a kid.

My dad would keep them as pets. He would catch them in the woods behind our crawfish ponds.

They're more common than you think. It's just hard to see them in the dark. Plus they don't make much noise gliding from tree to tree.

My aunt has some living in her oak tree behind her house. Its funny to watch them swoop around. They've gotten used to people and will pop out at night when were watching the game on the outdoor tv and drinking beer. She feeds them all kinds of stuff. I had no idea they liked eggs though.

We had an old box stand, and it was late in the season and it hadn't been hunt in about a month. Well I go to climbing into it and notice a little hole in the side so im suspicious. When I swing the door open all Hell breaks loose. Then a squirrel jumps full speed out the window, to its apparent death. Its at least 20' high btw. I look out the window and that little bastard is gliding away safely, it was awesome

I've gotten into a couple shooting houses that had nests of those bastards in it. It was pretty entertaining watching them run around until I made them GTFO

We had a cat when I was younger injure one and we nursed it back to health. We played with the cute little fella a while and then released back out in the woods.
